Regina FRANK,Germany

Lives and works in Lisabon.

Regina Frank has been exhibiting her installationsinternationally under the title “The Artist Is Present” for thepast decade in museums and public spaces. The performer’s visuallanguage, spoken mainly through text and textiles, reveals ameditative process of exploring inner and outer networks as well aspolitical, cultural and spiritual issues. Her works encompass afield of tension between virtual and real, analog anddigital.

Dataaccumulates everywhere in everything, but precious little of it isunderstood or recorded. This is by no meanssimply the X’s and O’s of the Internet, though it is that too.(…) Data determines the geographical pattern of recentglobal disasters. Regina Frank takes this information and wears iton her sleeve, or rather on her entire body and beyond, in theshape of immense circular dresses that spread out around hersculptural torso, active with the labor of stitching, transcribing, brushing, eating or kneading, depending on theperformance.

None of thisdata is unknown or inaccessible, but amid the escalatingonslaught of political, ethical, geological andclimatological information that comprises our universe, it becomesincreasingly difficult to remember just how real and present areits effects. Draped on her own insistently present body, ReginaFrank’s dresses make this palpably visible.

— Lori Waxman 60 Word/Min for Documenta 13, Kassel,Germany

iLand are public meditations and healing rituals or livingstill-lives. As Frank sits in Silence her some of her movements areso slow that they look normal only when speeded up 800 to1600 times. Surrounded by a large round dress like an island sheperforms a set of rituals like a dance. Her skirt is a textilecollage depicting landscapes of major environmentalissues.
