DirkJan Jager, the Netherlands

Livesand works in Amsterdam

Dirk JanJager is a performance artist working in a variety of media. He is also theco-curator of FLAM, the Forum of Live Art Amsterdam) and the co-founder ofbasis for Live Art, a platform for diverse performance practices and approachesbased in Amsterdam.

Dirk JanJager began his career as a painter, and in his performance work he stillapproaches painting from unusual perspectives. In many of his performances theliving surface of the body is defined as a site of intervention. It becomes ablank canvas, yet its surface does not exactly receive, or host, images. Jageralludes to motifs from painting or mythical figures to stage the body, allowingthe familiar image to act as a second skin, which in the course of theperformance is gradually peeled off, to reveal an anonymous, generic body. Acentral element in his work is the gesture of erasing identities, and imagesthat support them. Another aspect of his work is the interest in rituals andrites of passage, and transitional states that give birth to a new person, within a performative situation which involves the covering and peeling off thefull surface of the body with different materials.

Dirk Jan Jagers’ participation atGuangzhou Live is generously supported by the consulate general of theNetherlands in Guangzhou.

RareParity

RareParity is a durational, task-oriented performance that uses foreign currency asits primary material. Over the course of several hours the money is washed, dried, repainted and reconfigured. It can be presentational or have a relationalcomponent, or possibly a combination of the two, depending on the performancesituation.

The worktakes a look at our (willing/unwilling) complicity in the economic fabric ofour communities and our inextricable links to each other. Recent globaleconomic uncertainty demonstrates how vulnerable we are to the policies anddecisions of others and how fragile economies affect our lives.

Bjorn Olav Veno, Norway

Bjorn Veno is interested in how the artist, or the licensed fool, isan integral part of society and culture. The licensed fool unlike the naturalfool is a a character that stands between normality and insanity, someone whogoes beyond the confines of our paradigm to seek an alternative perspective forwhich he brings back ideas or knowledge that he translates for the consumptionof people.

Veno works with photography, video and performance, he studied at RoyalCollege of Art, was featured as one of the best new artists inBritain by The Observer, recently completed a residency in Boston at EmmanuelCollege and teaches institutions how to be fools.
