Is it a coincidence that Wu Jun, having spent his entire life in two of China's most bustling cities, paints scenes of crowds? Masses of abstracted, indistinct figures enveloped in washy clouds of vibrant color characterize his N Series. The title is related, he says, to both the mathematical representation of infinity and to newspapers, society’s record of time and history. He uses actual newspapers in his 3-dimensional works, such as the army of terra cotta warriors to which he’s decollaged, or affixed, snippets of newspapers to touristic, machine-made souvenirs creating another group portrait of unidifferentiated faces and figures.
