On August 30,DRC No.12 will host Wang Youshen’s latest experimental project Diplomatic Residence Compound. This is an experimental process work created specifically for the site. From initial installation to completion, the project will span eighty days, concluding on October 30.

The Wang Youshen solo exhibition, which shares its name with the exclusive international facility “Diplomatic Residence Compound,” is an exhibition about how artworksare exhibited, exploring the fascinating interactive channels of the “logistics network” to present and document the new possibilities for the “exhibition”,“viewing” and “participation” of artworks that arise each day. Within the“Diplomatic Residence Compound,” a place at once autonomous and non-autonomous,the artworks work within the unique contexts of “diplomacy” and “residence” to carry out a multilayered examination of art and medium, material and mind.

In the Diplomatic Residence Compound, do we have a truly autonomous space?

Wang Youshen’s artworks have played an integral role in the development of Chinese conceptualart since the 1990s. Unlike most artists, his critical stance has been consistently tied to shifts in his own role and identity, and often treats the individual experience of the viewer as an open door to the outside world. During the exhibition, DRC No.12 will release a project handbook and hold related public art discussions in the space and on social media.

Wang Youshen was born in Beijing in 1964.He resides and works in Beijing. The Diplomatic Residence Compound, located on Jianguomenwai Avenue in Beijing’s Chaoyang District, was constructed in 1971 as China’s first international office and residence compound for the overseas staff of embassies, international organizations and news agencies. In the 1970s and 80s, the compound’s uniquely international status made it a cradle forearly Chinese contemporary art exchange activities.

This non- profit space focuses on individual casestudies of representative artists with an eye for the times of which they are aproduct. On the foundation of the artist’s own judgment, these case studiessift through important works and exhibitions from different periods to find threads of life experience and the formation of ideas, presenting previously unpublished artworks and documentary materials to uncover the establishment of an artist’s individual aesthetic system.
