 About the Speakers

Liu Chengrui

Liu Chengrui (Guazi) was born in Qinghai Province in 1983. He graduated from Qinghai Normal University with a degree in Fine Arts in 2005, and currently lives and works in Beijing. His practice covers “live performances”, “durational performances”, videos, writings, etc. “Live performances” (or on-site performances) highlight the intense degree of repetition of certain behaviors in a particular setting. “Durational performances” often explore the relationships among people established for art-related purposes, regardless of any potential cultural inequalities. Maintaining this relationship with people, the artist manages to influence their life paths and social characters. Most of the artist’s durational performances last for a lifetime. The artist’s video work often employs pasture landscape as backgrounds to invoke the absurdity and poetic qualities of human beings situated in such a surrealistic atmosphere.

Wang Zhiliang

Wang Zhiliang is a lecturer in the department of Fine Arts in Hebei University and a visiting scholar at Pittsburgh University in the department of Architecture and History of Art. He received his PhD degree in philosophy from Renmin University. His primary research interests include avant-garde aesthetics, art criticism and methodology, and Chinese art in the 80s. A regular contributor to “Art Research”, “Fine Arts Research”, “Art Observe”, “Journal of Paintings”, he is the author of “The Avant-Garde Awareness in Contemporary Art”, “The Ramification and Progress of Avant-Garde Theory”, “Nouveau Avant-Garde and Anti-Regime”, “Dialectics of Avant-Garde Art” etc.
