The Present Imprint —— Reti Saks & Huang Zhiqiong Joint Painting Exhibition

Art is merely a vain relic in the face of fading time. Yet, art, as a reflection of the present, can inspire passion and the vision of freedom. Whether it be ignorance of self-identity without youth, or nostalgia towards the subtle change of nature, it exposes the fixation of time by an artist, who, in turn leaves a fascinating impression in the present.

From the works by Reti Saks from Estonia, and Huang Zhiqiong from China, we can see the individual experience as each artist relates to the present impression.

Saks’work originates from her self, creating a carving board, and eventually forming a screen that combines the print of photography with the skills of classical etching. She combines techniques of both modern computer art and digital photography to her heavy ink expression in order to place herself firmly in the particular moment. She repeats herself as an image in a sketch or a drawing, seeming to be self reflecting, or refracting into a mirror by showing three different viewpoints. Her work displays herself both consciously and unconsciously, or, rather like sarcasm to an exaggerated self or a dwarf. Using the subtle change of black and white, every image seems like a spirit attached to the body, establishing an inner stage of fantasy. The artist can dance on such a daydream stage, communicating and playing freely, aiming to preserve a moment of herself that will be immediately fading .

The watercolor work by Huang Zhiqiong, resonates with his oil painting series, the Tree Growing Upside Down, yet it is even more poetic in both line and rhythm. The birch tree is realized by the interweaving black and white lines, moving like a melody, one after another. Huang Zhiqiong manages to catch his memory in the momentum of the light shining on the tree, while it tenderly by sways in the wind with its unbalanced trunk and branches. The faded light shimmers in the splendor of the scorching heat and in the deep dark glamour. It echoes a melancholic, yet charming song, floating slightly along the lines, attracting our ambiguous eyesight. Our eyes, just like the branch of the tree, are eager to breathe, and embrace the bright sunlight. The artist transforms that brilliant sunlight into the trunk of the tree. These watercolor works are the result of a secret, which a beautiful soul rediscovers by the color and lines, bringing a refreshing art form to the interior of nature.

This joint exhibition presents the discovery by two artists, with different cultural backgrounds, of the inner self and of nature. By endowing its present impression into eternity, their work brings to us an experience of the fascination of art.
