“New Artrends” talk seriesⅡ No.1

Orientation, value and possibilities of non-profit art spaces

Nonprofit art spaces, as the name suggests, are independent of commercial system. Mostly organized by nongovernmental forces, these spaces stimulate and support young and experimental art. Nonprofit art space is not newborn thing in China with the fact that since the beginning of 21st Century the model of nonprofit space integrated into whole western art system has been introduced and continuously practiced by idealists. This kind of alternative spaces offer exhibition opportunities for young and unknown artists, as well as encourage artists to make explorations without market concerns. However, most of these spaces ended either with closure or transformation to commercial galleries due to weak social support in China.

History never lack of idealism successor. James Elaine, curator of HammerMuseum, L.A, founded Telescope in Cao Changdi to help young talented artists. With rich experience and understanding in western museum and nonprofit spaces, his dialogue with three Chinese practitioners would be enlightening. As the most experienced nonprofit art space, TaiKang Space could be another good model with their persistence and rational planning over the past ten years. Founded in 2008, probably the most modest art space, Arrow Factory gains international attentions with their unique model of sitespecific installations and projects in the city centre, Beijing. We’ve also invited independent curator Bao Dong, who just curated a survey exhibition on non-profit self-organized art spaces around China, to join the talk.

It’s inexorable trend for nonprofit art spaces to become independent and balancing forces in art system. Besides ideals and confidence, practitioners also have doubts and bewilderment. Therefore we invite these speakers with different backgrounds and views to discuss the sustainable possibilities of non-profit art spaces.

Founded by art collector Mr. Wang Bing in early 2014, New Century Art Foundation (NCAF) aims to study and promote the Chinese contemporary art. In addition to the existing art system, NCAF will do supportive and supplementary work for the development of the Chinese contemporary art. Through observation, research and working with good art institutions, NCAF will provide multiple platforms to promote young artists’ creations.

Speakers:

Bao Dong (independent curator)

James Elaine (founder of Telescope)

Su Wenxiang (curator of Tai Kang Space)

Wang Wei (founder of Arrow Factory)
