作品探讨民主制的前提,当今社会人人最求民主制度,在“积极分子”中我们看到的是要求民主制度的机器人。那么,媒体化的社会中,管理是什么?民主制到底是什么?
最近他们参加了OCAT2011驻地计划,他们的新作品“积极分子”正在深圳OCAT当代艺术中心“明天,谁说了算”展览上展出。参与展览的还有两位驻地艺术家,来至德国的Thomas Adebahr,与来至荷兰的Frank Havermans,展览由英国策展人Paula Orrell策展。

ZL: Tell us about your works, like where were those ideas came from?
O&N:Our works are always somehow connected to society, the influence of media and capital on our lives. They present ideas that concern our personal experiences, but we choose to present these thoughts in quite a neutral, impersonal form, where they relate more to a state of contemporary society at large. We are interested in the structure of what is presented to us as reality or fiction in the media, as well as in linguistic structure of media messages. In our works we draw parallels between commercial and the art worlds, where we often take the art world as a small scale model for conditions present in society as a whole. Quite a few of our works focus on the role of artist as a brand, or the idea of constant competition in capitalism.
So we just get the ideas from our surroundings and most of them are more or less stupid, and in the end it is often not clear what started a particular idea to begin with.
 
ZL: When did you getting started to make art?
O&N:We got to know each other at the art academy and then started to make art together a few years later.
 
ZL: When you make art who are you taking to?
O&N:Visual art is becoming less and less important in contemporary society. It is followed by rather closed circle of people involved with the arts professionally. We don’t believe that art has the power to change the world. Even though our work can be seen as critical of the world we live in, it is not intended to change anything. It is just there for people who are interested in it, not necessarily art audience.
 
ZL: Many of your works are full of fictitious and humorous, it‘s there any relationship of your life?How do you know it and understand it?
O&N:Our society is full of fiction. So we are asking ourselves in real life what is real and what is fiction? If for example war in Iraq was real? Is Ai Wei Wei really China’s best contemporary artist? Is Colgate in fact recommended by dentists worldwide, or is this fiction? As Slavoj Zizek said, on today’s market, we find a whole series of products deprived of their malignant property: coffee without caffeine, cream without fat, beer without alcohol, virtual sex as sex without sex, warfare with no casualties as warfare without warfare. Finally we are a part of the same system we are exploring, and that is why our works are humorous and also self ironic.
 
 
ZL:  What do you see as the theme or vision for your artwork?
O&N:In our art practice we don’t want to limit ourselves. We try to be open to many things and we always try to do something new, something different…
 
ZL: As a couple working together, what’s the challenge did you face?
O&N:We never had any problems, perhaps it is even easier, among other for practical reasons, since someone is more skilled with a certain area and the other in something else. In the end we discuss everything together. So the work is not burdened by ego, there is a distance, counter to individualism dominant in contemporary society.
