Such a funny-sounding word, quirk. No wonder it gets so little play in U.S. fashion. Yet it can say so much and there's so much to be said for it. Perhaps the only major American designer to understand its potential is Marc Jacobs. Consider the evidence: his collections are more playful than the rest, his holiday costume parties are the stuff of legend (he dressed up as a Wilbur the pig last year) and his campaigns are notorious for showing odd people in odd places doing odd things. Recently it was announced he had enlisted Malgosia, a supe only slightly past her prime, to model both the women's and men's pieces of the Marc by Marc Jacobs fall '06 campaign. Now comes Juergen Teller Cindy Sherman Marc Jacobs (Rizzoli, $45), a book of collaborative photos that began with Jacobs' spring 2005 campaign but goes well beyond it. Twenty-nine images show Jacobs-clad Teller and Sherman (in her first collaboration with another photographer) playing extreme, mostly tragic characters?a pit-stained trucker type, nerdy and gap-toothed office workers, a disturbed doll-clutching junkie, effeminate children?that seem to both mock and celebrate American stereotypes. Is Jacobs saying he wants to dress these hopelessly unglamorous people in real life? Who knows? Who cares? The point is, it doesn't matter: they have personality and quirk appeal.
