C5Art is presenting Extract – the 3rd Stall Keeper Show from March 20th to April 17th, 2011. Nearly forty young artists have been invited to draw on their own daily experience to create artistic works. The audience will see how artists extract elements from daily life for the purpose of artistic creation.

Stall Keeper Show has been held twice already to date, but unlike previous installments of the show, the current exhibition takes the nature of art itself as its starting point and examines the relationship between artistic creation and day-to-day experiences. Chinese contemporary art has evolved from a state of mimesis to a period of originality. The artists are more centered on transforming daily life into contemporary artistic creation. Apart from that, the focus of the show remains on art’s relationship with capital and power as well as the interaction between art and the audience.

All works at the current show will be exhibited anonymously. Audiences must start from the work itself, and try to feel out the experiences and thoughts that each artist is trying to express through the work. Meanwhile, buyers will also have to decide whether they want to own a piece of work based on the work itself. So, it will be a change from the established viewing method in which you assess a work based on preconceived notions. The artist’s reputation, critical views and other external factors will not affect the audience’s take on the work.

After the opening of the exhibition there will be an interactive element in which we launch the project, Everyone is a Critic. We look forward to objective and honest criticism from all our audience members who attend the show, and we hope audience members write down their own feelings about the exhibition. In today’s world, as contemporary art is at an apex – and art exhibitions are a dime a dozen – what does an audience get out of the transaction apart from just being there at the scene? During the exhibition, both the curator and the artists hope that the audience will write their criticism of the work on our blog; then, we will select a number of articles after the exhibition closes, awarding members of the audience with not only spiritual but also material encouragement.

Without participation from the audience, the exhibition will be ineffective, so active viewing is absolutely indispensable.
