In Hou Hanru’s conception, By Day, By Night is by no means a conventional exhibition, but an open-ended result of each single artist’s understanding and experience of Shanghai - the cultural backdrop of the project. They have brought about new perspectives to illustrate the transformation of urban life, and in the meantime, constructed their own connections with such a backdrop in their signature styles. This new relationship ushers in more experimental efforts and original creation in their works, in which sense the “exhibition” has evolved into a dynamic and complex process of production and communication beyond the conventional mode of curation. more...

3,100 Years in 1 Minute--Hu Jieming solo exhibition
Opening: October 22, 2010, Friday 18:00
Exhibition dates: October 23 to November 23, 2010
Venue: ShanghArt Gallery
Bldg 16, 50 Moganshan Road, 200060 Shanghai
Curator: Li Zhenhua

In this realm, time becomes space. – Richard Wagner, Pasifal

Man collects art, while art collects history. It’s the cultural game for thousands years. Now Hu Jieming will bring you into a special dimension consisting of fine art, where the time and space will be deconstructed.

This October, ShanghART Gallery will launch the new project of Hu Jieming, known as 100 Years in 1 Minute. This huge installation consists of 1100 1-minute-videos, which are stored and displayed in thousands of storage bags, and each piece is a deconstruction of some master piece of modern times. When audience stands before this crazy, noisy and joking animation world, they will face a unprecedent impact.

Hu Jieming compressed 100 years into 1100 artworks – as the metonym of human civilization and history in this period. Therefore, deconstruct art is to deconstruct the world we know. But these kind of devastating deconstructions do not lead to historical criticism. In artist’s opinion, they are just experiments: “like we degrade some common thing into some unknown objects in laboratory, we try to test the possibilities and consequences of combining visual culture memories of 100 years in 1 minute randomly.”

When an artwork is surrounded by time and space, or history and system, its original status will be changed slowly. Artworks are not invariable, on the contrary, they will get distorted, changeful and older. The only unchanging thing is that everything will change. Sometime the more we destroy artworks, the further we abandon violence, and we’ll find the essential of art closer.

ShanghART Gallery invites you to participate in this exhibition, then you can walk into its time-space wormhole from 1 minute to 100 years.

The exhibition will open on Oct.22, and last a month.

Co-presented by: Hanart TZ Gallery, Moonchu Foundation
Supported by: Verdant Foundation, Pinnacle Group Co., Ltd, World Culture Organization, David Tang, Enrico Navarra
Seaneographer: Bu Bing

This project invites artists from India and China to consider the role of play in contemporary life. Artists are invited to participate in residencies and exhibitions in the two countries during 2010-11. The invitation to play is extended on the premise that idea of play (and the ludic instinct that underpins it) is a fundamentally life-affirming gesture, too often lost in the midst of the quest for topical issues that the art object must address. Diplomatic relations between the two countries have perhaps played the dominant role in governing cultural encounters to date. Through its invitation to indulge in a basic and universal human activity (and need), the project hopes to inaugurate a more lasting series of relationships between artist communities across the two nations. more

Venue: Minsheng Art Museum

21 KE is a movie discussing about self-existence. We always question life, achieve value or meaning of life, keep looking for different referencing system to define self-existence; however, the world may not be like what we cognize, it could be a complicated mixture of multivariate and multiple systems which coexist and parallel. When we are trying to care, ultimately, we will realize that we are at the most marginal place of the world; we stand on the cliff, and we are always embarrassed. We are on the way to find the truth, we can feel its existence, but can never get close to it. The world is round; our life is like pi; but our continuous approaches turn to be endless cycles.

Sharism: A Mind Revolution
By Isaac Mao

With the People of the World Wide Web communicating more fully and freely in Social Media while rallying a Web 2.0 content boom, the inner dynamics of such a creative explosion must be studied more closely. What motivates those who join this movement and what future will they create? A key fact is that a superabundance of community respect and social capital are being accumulated by those who share. The key motivator of Social Media and the core spirit of Web 2.0 is a mind switch called Sharism. Sharism suggests a re-orientation of personal values. We see it in User Generated Content. It is the pledge of Creative Commons. It is in the plans of future-oriented cultural initiatives. Sharism is also a mental practice that anyone can try, a social-psychological attitude to transform a wide and isolated world into a super-smart Social Brain.

A204, Bldg.4, 50 Moganshan Rd., Shanghai 200060

There are 6 artists gathering at Vanguard Gallery from Tokyo and Shanghai.

They all differ in concepts, means of expressions and styles but they are all asking a question "what is an art?"

Their ways vary just like the real world has many senses of values. Seeking how to express themselves, these artists keep on gazing the contemporary society so close that they create something utterly new.

Koie's photogoraphs are always shot with her aesthetics. It is just not an ordinary one but has her own new movement within.

The photos of “trees” were exhibited at the Ohara Museum of Art where they were praised equally great to some famous 19th and 20th paintings.

Narahashi has shot photos with the lens half dipped into the water of seas and lakes. Including very original view point, they are highly praised world widely.

In the plain style of snap shots, we can see how sharp Tobu's sense is regarding the angles, objects and compositions.

Tanaka, the oil painter is in pursuit of the very life of her productions, a human in a space by painting fantasies.

The social issues Gao Mingyan concerns will not change even with the geographical and cultural differences. reveals the indifference among the people nowadays.

Liu Fei questions the value system of contemporary Chinese art. And he also focuses on other values in the fast growing China of today and the misunderstandings between the east and the west. As an artist, Liu Fei is bold and skilled in using of various materials and playful visual language.

This exhibition will be on view through Oct.16th till Nov.14th.

We request the honor of your presence at the opening on Oct.21st 2010 from 4 to 7pm.

Narrating the Cruelty of Youth: the Bio-Cybernetic Art of Lu Yang

by Dajuin Yao

Open Media Lab, China Academy of Art
(translated from Chinese by the author)

Lu Yang, an immensely powerful pretty little girl.
Just like this seeming oxymoron, her art is at once cute, cruel, impish, pedantic, sober, and ecstatic. It’s conflicting, schizophrenic. It’s beyond comprehension, or so it seems.
No doubt, control is what Lu Yang’s art is about. Machine/animal control, machine/corpse control, human/machine control, machine/human control, human/human control. Yet, at the core of this control hierarchy is mind control. Behind, or perhaps inside, these unnamable cybernetic systems by this highly original artist (by either domestic or international standards) hides a consciousness entity that is sensitive and playful in the extreme – an advanced consciousness that far exceeds her age, length, and wingspan. Those textbook-like cold, sanitized dissection charts and diagrams are merely her bonnets, wigs, and fake eyeglasses – veils that she slaps on everyday to disguise her prettiness.

The Wrinkle of the City /

The Wrinkles of the City / Les sillons de la ville / Los Surcos de a Ciudad /城市肌理, is a world scale project by JR. The project starts with portraits of elderly people who represent the memory of a city past. JR interviews each person and records the changes witnessed in the city. Then these portraits, printed in monumental sizes, are pasted in the very same city in various places that inspire JR and represent the city’s heritage. Memory can stumble and fall - disappear any minute as the elderly leave us - JR shows us that it is important not to forget what the elderly have to pass on to younger generations. Without any judgment, JR just gives us bits of history in an artistic, yet poetic, social and above all, human way.

The Wrinkle of the City / 城市肌理, 是JR在全世界范围内计划的一个艺术项目。
Limited edition prints by JR

WHO IS JR? JR是?

Recently awarded by the famous TED prize for his street action, JR defines hismelf as photographer who works on the borders of art and activism. To him the streets are one big art gallery and the city is a playground for larger-than-life shows. Since 2001, from Paris to Los Angeles via Montfermeil-Clichy-sous-Bois (France, Jerusalem), JR has presented many of his giant pasted photos in street shows. JR began photography in 2000. He began by photographing graffiti artists in action, then decided to invest himself the walls of his own city; Paris.

In 2004, he worked on his series 28 millimeters. The first chapter was called Portrait of a Generation and made the cover of the New York Times. Giant portraits of young people from Parisian suburbs were shown in their own towns, and then to raise consciousness, were brought back to the center of Paris and were shown in the European House of Photography and Art Center in City Hall. After that in 2007 he added a second chapter to his series 28 millimeters - Face2Face, Israelis and Palestinians - Portrait of Twin Brothers. JR made portraits of Israelis and Palestinians who had the same job to show them literally face to face on both sides of the “separation/ security” wall in Israel and in several Palestinian and Israeli towns.

Then in 2007 JR initiated his project Women Are Heroes, which was shown in 2008. By photographing women in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Southern Sudan and Kenya, JR pays tribute to these conflict areas and shares their stories of dignity. He exhibited portraits in their home countries and in spectacular exhibitions in several cities around the world. The project led JR in Brazil was done on the scale of an entire favela (Portuguese for slum) and then pursued in Cambodia and India.

Women Are Heroes was also the subject of a film made by JR, selected at the Cannes Film Festival for the Critics' Week in association with the Official Selection.

Since then, JR has started a new series of works involving Wrinkles of the City, imprinting the cities’ memories through the testimony of their elderly inhabitants. Each pasted portrait is like a layer, thick with paper and glue, which is then superimposed on the facades. The superimposition of the portraits and their wrinkles shows the city’s creases, highlights traces of history, sometimes even in a painful way for a city that has also lost certain aspects of its own youth.
