No Soul for Sale: A Festival of Independents

t's hard to believe Tate Modern is only ten years old, given its status as a London landmark and a major player in the city's art scene (it's the world's most visited modern art gallery). To celebrate entering double digits, Tate Modern will hold an arts festival in the Turbine Hall with artists' collective No Soul For Sale and 50 independent collectives and art spaces, which will stage performances, music and film over a long weekend. The gallery will stay open until midnight on Friday and Saturday in order to cram everything in, and visitors are invited to submit their memories of the gallery to be made into a film (via Tate Modern's blog and other online channels). On May 12, accompanied by a band, a parade of 300 local children will walk from Borough Market to the Tate bearing birthday cakes inspired by the iconic building to share with visitors: see the website for details of this and all other events

Crazy English (Chinese: 疯狂英语; Fēngkuáng Yīngyǔ) is a brand name related to a non-traditional method of learning English in mainland China conceived by Li Yang. Li believes that the traditional way of learning English in China is ineffective. Li Yang's method places heavy emphasis on practicing English orally. His method can be described with the quote "To shout out loud, you learn." Students practice his technique by going behind buildings or on rooftops and shouting English. They also go to his rallies and shout together; this helps them overcome their shyness (everybody is doing it, so nobody is embarrassed). In many ways it remains similar to the traditional pedagogic practices of Chinese education in that it still relies on repetition and recitation.
