“现实主义亭”是一次国际性的展览，展览的题目借用了现实主义画家库尔贝（Gustave Courbet）的同名展。库尔贝的作品被1855年巴黎世博会所拒绝，他的“展馆”就是对此事件的直接回应。而本次展览则在2010年上海世界博览会的语境中再次上演了当年库尔贝的前卫精神。
法国官方沙龙曾经对参展作品进行审查，而本次参加2010年世博会的国家则试图借助文化、艺术来强调自己的民族性，但本次展览并不打算探讨那些影响当今世界的棘手问题。相反，本次展览将秉承库尔贝的反抗精神，用艺术的方式呈现与“现实主义”有关的社会现实问题，从而弥补了2010年上海世博会在这方面的缺席。
The Pavilion of Realism is an international exhibition inspired by a similarly titled exhibition organized by Realist painter Gustave Courbet. Courbet’s Realist Pavilion was a direct response to the rejection of one of his works from the 1855 Paris Universal Expo. The Pavilion of Realism updates the tension between the Universal Expo and Courbet’s pavilion within the context of the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai.
Like the official French salons that censored art because it was considered subversive, countries participating in the 2010 World Expo will promote nationhood via culture and art; yet what will be displayed will likely not explore the most pressing issues affecting the global community today. In contrast and in spirit with Courbet’s oppositional exhibition, The Pavilion of Realism will present challenging art that addresses social problems with “realism” absent in the exhibiting pavilions of the 2010 World Expo.
