Viewpoints & Viewing Points - 2009 Asian Art Biennial

56 artists and teams from 20 Asian-Pacific countries are invited to give their views on the current situations in Asia.

In 2007, the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts has successfully organized the first Asian Art Biennial. By way of a typical Asian greeting, Have You Eaten Yet - 2007 Asian Art Biennial opened up the dialogues among artists from the Asian-Pacific region. This year's Viewpoints & Viewing Points - 2009 Asian Art Biennial will focus on the dialogues and interactions between different viewpoints and viewing points. More specifically, this year's 2009 Asian Art Biennial explores how a multiplicity of perspectives have come to inform our contemporary reality, and how such reality, characterized by high degrees of equivocality, has in turn enriched the cultural perspectives of Asia.

As the economic performance of Asian countries continues to attract global attention, issues related to cultural perspectives and aesthetic foundations of Asia have become key points of interest in the world of contemporary arts. Enriched by the diversity of cultural perspectives, Asian contemporary arts have flourished and expanded to meet the aesthetic needs of our time. Serving as an important platform of artistic exchange between Taiwan and the international arts community, the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts has always been keen to facilitate intercultural dialogues through art. This year's 2009 Asian Art Biennial highlights the diversity, differences and conflicts within the Asian communities themselves. We hope that extensive communication and discussion on the subject will enhance our understanding of contemporary Asia and its dynamic artistic creativity.

Viewpoints & Viewing Points - 2009 Asian Art Biennial invites 56 artists, filmmakers and production teams from 20 Asian-Pacific countries to present a total of 145 works including painting, installation art, sculpture, digital arts, animation and documentary. All the works featured in the 2009 Asian Art Biennial demonstrate the artists' unique perspectives in their observations of contemporary culture and society.

During the course of the 2009 Asian Art Biennial (October 24th 2009 ~ February 28th 2010), the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts will also host a series of related events to introduce differing perspectives and discourses from different cultural backgrounds. These events will begin with the 2009 Asian Art Biennial Artist Forum (October 24th - 25th 2009), followed by a Summit Forum on Asian Arts, an International Symposium, guided tours and teachers programs.
