Before the Golden Age—when the high-tech Consumerism multimedia teaching and large acreage low-priced inkjet are popularized, blackboard was once a prevailing tool of publicity and education. As the cheapest, easiest and simplex daily entertainment among the masses, blackboard has naturally formed a style of brief and concise, with text and pictures, rough but dazzle, subtle but moving over the years. It has been quietly hanging on the backwall of classroom with spider web, the gate of industrial and mining enterprises, by the corridor of community and rural brigade. It makes those young folk art lovers fully expressed their original talents. Each active artist now was once more or less participated in early aesthetic enlightenment national art practice, with the way forced, initiative, helpless, and positive, to accomplish the task.
Blackboard, the most common, political, serious, stereotyped, vacant, popular, flourish way of art creating, solely makes those precious, lifelike, inspired, hysterical, weird, irrepressible art be displayed initially and with glory. Even if it is a tool like propaganda, so ideology, so immobilized, so fascistic and different inside out, it can’t hold those talent artists back from the sensitivity of formal languages and those earthshaking talent can also be revealed tirelessly in the aesthetic standard of 1970s or 1980s. So how should artists who have obtained fully liberation and liberty today to face a once familiar and so plain blackboard?

He An presented a neon light changing color frame which had the same dimensions as the black board. These last few years, He An has been regularly using neon light in his works... more
The black board has been cut into a window, and a showcase has been added to it, featuring a landscape.
Kan Xuan turned the black board into a trash can.
Chen Wenbo carved the words '一单生意' meaning 'one business', in the style of traditional panels usually hung at the entrances of temple, schools or other institutions.
Qiu Zhijie wanted to use chalk to write on the board, but it wasn't possible (the surface of the board wasn't treated properly). He then re-applied some black painting on it and sent the board to various municipal offices to use it for a certain period of time...the board is presented with pictures of the way it was used in the different offices.
Jin Shan presented the board together with a video where he gets into illegal taxis and ask them to drive him to New York....
Yang Zhenzhong turned the black board into a mirror..
Ye Linghan, young artist, mounted speakers on the board, each of them being connected to a speaker box with words of locations written on them.
Wang Yuyang modified the blackboard, turning it into a broken plasma screen... Some of his past artworks include daily life object, made of rubber which move as if they were breathing...more
Hangzhou artist, Shao Yi, filled the surface of the blackboard with computer cards. A hint to the new technology replacing the old traditional black board?
Zhang Ding filled the surface of the board with light bulbs, then using a hammer, broke them one by one...glass sparkles fall with noise as bulbs explode.
Zhu Yu depicted a court scene with himself being sued for having eaten a baby in a performance he did in 2000.
People are invited to write anything they want on the board using black marker on the black surface.
Zhang Peili carved a drawing, collected and displayed the carved pieces.
A pencil is fixed on a small machine, every few seconds it moves backward and forward, knocking the board, always at the same place.
Sun Xun painted a mosquitoe, following the ideas of his previous works....more
Liu Wei directly cut out the board together with the shipping crate and assembled the pieces into three dimensional objects. Liu Wei used this technique before cutting daily life objects in a sharp and precise way, revealing their composition, etc.
Xu Zhen hung off the board to a group of young artists, curating their show on this small venue.

Blackboard Exhibition at ShanghART H-Space
"While I wasn't expecting to find 20 different blackboards made by 20 different artists decorated with chalk landscapes or portraits or covered with Hello Kitty stickers at the Blackboard exhibition, I was pleasantly surprised to discover an exhibition more creative than I had thought it would be. The first piece visitors encounter is He An's blackboard, which is neither black nor a board. Colored neon lights frame a large white space as each side and color illuminates, clockwise, in turn. It felt like an advertisement for something ("Car Wash!" or "99 cent Hamburger!"), but where any text or photo might have been, instead was an open white space, freeing the viewer to imagine anything they wanted inside of this "blackboard."
Cheng Ran's blackboard was exactly the opposite: it was an entirely spray-painted black creation, a cutout scene where physical layers provided the only way to differentiate between this black and that black… for whatever reason my first thought was of Halloween, which of course made me miss every kind of chocolate other than Dove (like Hershey’s!).
Jin Shan did use an actual blackboard to create his work, but not in any way that you might be expecting. He tied a rope to the board and strapped it to his back, stood on the side of the road, and created a six minute video of himself asking passing motorists to take him to New York, thus the title of the piece: To New York. If Jin Shan has ever seen an episode of Candid Camera, the concept might not be all that creative, but it was an enjoyable video at least, and certainly used the blackboard in an unexpected way. I’m not sure whether the performance was staged or not, but the video ends with the driver of a white van agreeing to load his blackboard into the back: they drive off into the distance, before the video fades to black. I’m not sure they made it to New York.
My favorite piece was Qiu Zhijie’s blackboard, which he sprayed black before lending it to various committees, organizations, and even a farmers’ market to use for periods of time ranging from a few weeks to a few months. He photographed the blackboard in use at each location, wiped it clean after the final use, and attached the four photos to the blank slate.

The Blackboard’s show at Shanghai was very interesting and unique in that it is one of the very few shows I have seen to date in which artists are invited by the curator with the purpose of creating a piece through a series of very specific conditions including the physical object of a blackboard. Most of the time a themed group show seems dictated by the artists previous works and curators need to either work around the artist’s pieces or just find new artists. In this case then it seems to me that the curator is almost more important than the artist. He has taken the reins of direction and sculpted the show into something of his own vision. Although he has no say in the actual pieces within the boundaries of his prompt he does have control of the environment at large (which I think is just as important and sometimes maybe more) in the end he is basically appropriating objects to create his own installation.
My actual critique of the show is lukewarm conceptually it seems strong and full of potential but the execution fell short. The editing process of blackboard I thought desperately needed rethinking with such an interesting prompt and work the display of it could’ve been handle with more ingenuity. For instance the idea of education and it’s relationship to the blackboard might have been further considered and realized. Also although some of the work (I would say 2/5 of it) was very inspired and fresh, but a majority was trite and that detracted from the experience, the benefits of editing would have strengthened the already good works, giving it transitions and dramatic emphasis, and also it gave the audience room to breath and reflect on the work rather than an assembly line of so-so art.
