Exhibition Brief:

Iberia Center for Contemporary Art proudly announces the first exhibition of the year 2009, “What has been happening here?” —— the Inaugural Exhibition of Chinese Independent Film Archive (CIFA). The whole event attempts to give a panorama report on the development of Chinese independent film over the past ten years in three parts: film sreenings, a document exhibition and panel discussions.

During the exhibition, Live Concerts featuring Japanese musician Otomo Yoshihide and his friends, and documentary screenings will be included as special events of this exhibition.

Located inside the Iberia Center for Contemporary Art at 798 Art Zone of Beijing, CIFA is a non-profit academic institution devoted to sorting, collecting, and promoting of contemporary Chinese independent films. In “Community of Tastes” the inaugural exhibition of Iberia Center for Contemporary Art, the Center has showcased independent films section conceived by Zhang Yaxuan the director of CIFA. “What has been happening here?” CIFA Inaugural Exhibition further expresses the Center’s continuous attention to one of the most forceful and dynamic part of the contemporary art.

In film screenings, about 80 films from home and abroad will be shown including features, documentaries and experimental films. Six thematic sections are programmed in the screening:

1. The Chinese Independent Film Invitational 2008-2009 has chosen the most compelling and powerful works of 2008, including both documentary and feature films, in an attempt to showcase the development and achievement of the industry over the past year.

2. DV Film Retrospective will re-view a fine selection of DV films produced along the progress of Chinese independent films, with the objective to show the relation they bear to independent filmmaking today. This part expresses a recognition of a particular period in contemporary film history.

3. 13 Years (1996-2008): Directing and Producing of Jia Zhangke, Yu Likwai and Chow Keung would like to widen the focus by showing in the special program how these people have blazed a trail for Chinese independent film through their constant creativity.

4. Film Festival Cinema Digital Seoul ( CinDi ) Touring Show-Beijing have selected a number of films from CinDi's competitive entries in the 2007 and 2008 festivals with the hope to increase mutual understanding among young Asian filmmakers.

5. Time•Journey•Memory is a presentation of two long-feature documentaries by Israeli director, Ron Havilio. Based on his own personal experience, both works intertwine time with space, and reflect on memories, family, love and concern for others.

6. Experimental Shorts gives a close watch over the developments in experimental film in the field of contemporary art. On show there will be works by the most outstanding experimental filmmakers including Cao Fei, Dong Wensheng, Gao Shiqiang, Jiang Zhi, Lu Chunsheng, Qiu Anxiong, Yang Fudong, etc.

The Document Exhibition will focus on six festivals, organizations or work studios dedicated to the promotion and distribution of independent film on the mainland in recent years, through texts, images, videos and audios, they are:
Fanhall Films (2001), Yunnan Multi Culture Visual Festival (Yunfest, 2003), Chinese Independent Film Festival (CIFF, 2003), Caochangdi Workstation (2005), Indie Workshop (2005), Lixianting’s Film Fund (2006). In addition, we have decided to extend the document exhibition through the “Library Project”. The project is intended to collect and display publications and printed materials on Chinese independent films, collected from magazines, posters, and catalogues of international film festivals that have taken a keen interest in Chinese independent film. These materials document the history of not only independent filmmaking and filmmakers, but also that of the circulation of independent film.

Time will reveal and prove the significance and depth that independent film has achieved in terms of its representations of social realities and its reflections on individual existence in contemporary China. The film exhibition “What has been happening here?”, jointly curated by Zhang Yaxuan the director of CIFA, Zuo Jing the art director of Iberia Center for Contemporary Art, and Dong Bingfeng the executive editor-in-chief of Art and Investment & Contemporary Art and Investment Magazines, will open on 29th March and run through three weeks. It attempts to allow more people from outside the field know what has been happening here in the past ten years, and help us to think, understand and live in the complex Chinese reality of our time
