“bad feelings”

shanghai, nov. 2008

artists born after the 70s are a very special group of people.

they have moved past the pain from scar litereature movement, the melancholy of root seeking and the emotion for the 85 new wave. commerce, technology, and information provided them with an open environment, unlimited opportunities and new medium which altered their social and human concerns. but at the same time, they found a complex societal structure, increasingly warped values and emotionless relationships which are indecisive and unbearable. they exaggerate their own fears for the future, lost in opportunities and desires which are supplanted by impatience, doubt, contradiction, confusion, struggle, frustration, emptiness, ridicule and vent.

this exhibition focuses on the daily survival of this group of young artists in contemporary society as well as the emotional turmoil they confront.

sheng jie’s (gogoj, beijing) varied art works including video, photography, sound, and installation are full of helplessness, disdain and confrontation of contemporary society and the unbalanced development of art. Having studied western classical music since childhood she has developed a distinctive feel for sound. in this video work, simple pictures coexist with a dense strange low frequency noise, which brings people to a crevice that lies between reality and illusion. Her art work is psychedelic, surreal, strange, and at times humorous. It also presents the coexistence between contradiction and harmony. The images reveal the simple and happy adolescence that the artist cherishes.

wu yizhong (effie wu, taipei/berlin) excels at extending the theatrical stage into her video art performances.. her facial expression is the most spectacular part in the entire performance. the face as the platform of conveying feelings to the audience projects the most complex emotional movement of the art work, which was embodied in both her award winning video work super smile in 2007 and wahn currently on display. the video work is simple but audiences are left feeling uncomfortable, anxious even frightened by images which convey perfectionism sought by the performer but are at times repetitive. effie’s study of drama, in taipei, in her early years is reflected in the way she pays close attention to human facial expressions and her special understanding of video art. The excellent balance between space, time, physical movement and facial expression draws audiences into the work.. although her work is presented in a straightforward, funny way, it conveys very strong feelings of tension, anxiety and desire.

li ming (hangzhou) is the youngest participating artist. However, the sensitivity his work projects are far beyond his age or experience. His work often carries a touch of surrealist beauty and romance, and a poetic nature emits from his narration, although, in the end, it will all be artificially destroyed. His gift of focusing on life’s minute details to touch the depth of human emotion is vividly illustrated throughout his work. The technically beautiful images, springing from his imagination, are desired by all people, yet very few are willing to expose themselves to the depth and content which these images convey. when it all fades away, we still face loneliness, fragility, helplessness, pain and dread…
