Beijing 798’s T Space will launch HUASHAN PROJECT, a Shi Jinsong solo exhibition of new work, on September 5th, after Shi Jinsong’s July exhibition of new work at Platform China. The HUASHAN PROJECT creates twists and turns in the 1200-square-meter gallery to create a legend. “Huashan,” a mountain’s name, is a loaded, legendary term, capturing Earth’s crusts’ upward movements. The word’s meaning lives deep in unconscious value systems, and neither natural or geological sciences nor simple or traditional terms can summarize it. Huashan is an omnipresent name, even in remote areas. Huashan is a common name; many places use it in their names. Both high and low profile names can use the term, as this exhibition’s works demonstrate. Huashan is a scenic, closed, space with only one way out, making it inexplicable to baojiang* as well as both strange and familiar time-related behavior. Huashan can define and describe possibility, and can be ignored by details. Huashan is a very practical experience in the abstract; all is nothing; everywhere is specific. It contains much labor everywhere.

* Baojiang, a professional term in the Chinese antique industry, is a vestige an object carries to show its old age. Many years of dust, sweat, burial, water erosion, rubbing, oxidization, and sun exposure, depending on the type of object, create a deposit that appears on the object as a film. It gives the object a smooth, gratifying, veiled, gentle, glow, giving the viewer positive feelings of affection and reminiscence for the old.
