A participant in the seminal "**** Off" exhibition in 2000, Yang Zhichao returns to Eastlink with a major solo show of works spanning his career. Yang's art is often an exploration of the human body - he particularly enjoys sticking things into his own human body. Eastlink is very proud to present Yang Zhichao's first solo exhibition in August.
The human body has always attracted Yang Zhichao's attention. Our body has never belonged to ourselves less than it does today. Long ago, the body was a personal affair. When the heart or lung became diseased, the only thing we could do was to wait and see the person become weak and die. Today, as every part of the body can be replaced and reformed, the nature of body changes thoroughly and has a connection with the whole manufacturing system of society. In this way, the body is no longer my own but belongs to society. The thought of a person also changes based on this.
When I eat with my mouth, I'll say it is delicious! When I am touched by hands, I'll say it feels good! If I see a person kill a chicken with my eyes, my heart will hurt. And the thought occurs.
As thought occurs, so do questions. The more complicated the thought is, the more questions will appear. And the solution is just as the saying goes: it is better for the doer to undo what he has done. We can only go back to the body, explaining thoughts through basic body parts like blood, skin and veins, and solving problems using feeling, sense of pain and taste. But if you want to understand how thoughts occur and how to solve problems, you should cut the skin and examine. Thus body art comes into being. Like a scalpel, it strives to solve the common problem of human beings while solving personal problems.
