小谷元彦于1972年出生在日本京都,目前居住东京。自从2000年参加长谷川佑子所策画的里昂双年展后。他的作品一直备受关注,尔后也连续参加了伊斯坦堡双年展,光州双年展,更在2003年代表日本馆参加参加2003威尼斯双年展的《梦想与冲突》展,展出 《骨骼》(2003)和《贝雷斯》(2003).
小谷元彦毕业于东京艺术大学雕塑系硕士,是当今日本最受瞩目的年轻艺术家之一。他的作品包括有混合媒材装置以及摄影作品。小谷元彦在作品风格与材质的选择上一反传统的雕塑方式,转而使用各种不同的特殊材料作为创作表现的手法。他所使用的材料种类繁多,诸如狼的标本、天鹅标本和鲨鱼的牙齿(扣环, 1997)等,大胆的交织不同媒材后所构成的细腻表现手法与现代感的语汇这让小谷的作品呈现出一种独特的尖锐的视觉效果、原始的触感。
由于小谷元彦在学校主修木雕,因此对于身体与皮肤表层有着敏锐的观察,不论是在材质或者主题的选定上都有直接诉诸于感官的细腻表现。除了材质的选定特殊以外,小谷元彦在主题选择上也相当讲究,其中尤其对于尸体、肉体、解剖等题材痴迷,他擅长于透过这种对于人类原始欲望的血淋淋的解剖表现,让观众感到忐忑不安。而他对肉体和尸体的迷恋(fetish)也反映在作品的名称上,《训诫(第一章)》(1996),《幻肢》(1997)都是例子。作品有许多象征性的符码表现,让人彷佛进入超现实主义一般充满神秘而不可言喻的世界。观众透过他的作品可以看到人性对于迷恋、恐惧、求生欲和或者性等原始欲望的流露,世纪末的虚无感透过小谷元彦的作品传达给观众一种强烈的”痛”感反应,以及迷恋”痛感”的自虐心理投射。
