其实介绍宫岛的创作理念非常简单：他的基本思想从80年代末至今几乎没有改变过——表达人与事的无限关联与发展，生命的繁荣往复永不停息；甚至表现手法都基本相似——以LED（发光二极管）为主要媒介。
以” Mega Death”为例，计数器上只存在数字1到9，交互跳动，循环往复，借用了宗教的概念，但却从未采用过数字“0”。对此，宫岛解释说：“1－9代表轮回，是有生命力的“光”；而0，只是“黑暗”，像“死亡”一样。”
但这个解释略为勉强，于是我继续追问：“‘0’既是万物的开端，也是终结，它的形状亦是没有节点的轮回，岂不是从另一个角度代表着永不停息的生命？” 宫岛点了点头，极其不见外地拿过我的笔记本，在上面写了一个大大的“空”字：“‘空’是哲学中很重要的概念，也是我概念中非常重要的一部分，它充满能量，包含生死。生就是1－9，而死是0，也就是不可见。”
于是“可见与不可见”成为解锁的关键词——他并非否认“0”的存在，只是其不可见。连锁地，这也是为什么他坚持采用LED作为创作元素——LED很容易表现这个概念，因为1－9时，灯是亮的,运动着，是光的存在；当跳动到0时，灯就灭了，也就是黑暗。
