这个作品参加英国2007GRAIN艺术展
我和我的朋友们在西安寻找1000个下岗工人，录制他们的“声音”。在英国的原来的工业区现场，我们播放这些工人的“声音”。这是一次工人的回声。工业革命在英国爆发，相关的工人革命的理论也在英国诞生。然后影响到中国。今天，大量中国的工人下岗了，失去了声音，我们录制他们的声音返回到英国。

小月,不要以为你的想法很好,有英国北京也是没有用的.现在你都是用急办法在做作品,这会很气短.按你的脑筋静一点,其实会很快实在起来的.建议你少做策划,不要太理想地觉得自己能担当很是宏观的事情.如此,你的作品会进步很快.期待你下一个作品_________老艾

“工人的回声”是应英国2007GRAIN艺术展的邀请而创作的。GRAIN艺术展选择了一个“退场”的工业区作为展览的现场，而我在西安的工作室正好位于西安最著名的纺织业工业区。这里的工业大部分也已经“退场”，大批工人下岗。我们都知道，上个世纪50年代，无产阶级政权建立之初，工人是无产阶级的先锋队，拥有很高的社会地位。而无产阶级革命的理论正是马克思在英国第一次提出的，进一步，工业革命也是在英国爆发的。一种把中国工人的现实命运跟英国的工业革命历史和无产阶级革命理论相互联系在一起的冲动出现在我的脑海里：我们能不能把中国工人的现实命运放在一个更加更加广阔的世界历史的范围里去思考？我想收集1000个中国下岗工人的“声音”，通过GRAIN艺术展让英国观众在一个“下岗”的工业区听到这些“声音”。
目前我已经收集了大约150个下岗工人的“声音”（实际上是他们在讲述他们自己的故事），因为GRAIN艺术展的声音播放的时间是2小时，所以我会精选30个工人的声音（每个声音大约5分钟）连接在一起，作成一个声音文件，在GRAIN艺术展现场播放。由于中国人使用的是汉语，所以英国观众基本上“听不懂”他们在讲什么，但是，我不打算找人去翻译它。因为我只希望英国观众听到“抽象”的中国下岗工人的“声音”就足够了。
与此同时，我也制作了一个“听得懂”的版本，用每天一个“故事”的方式公布在我自己的博客上面：[url]http://blog.sina.com.cn/yueluping2007，这个针对中国观众的计划从8月1日已经开始。这样的话，一个“听不懂”的版本和一个“听得懂”的版本构成了一个完整的“工人的回声”这件作品。
Commissioned specially for the GRAIN, Echo of the Working Class will take place within is a series of sound works staged within the decommissioned industrial zone on the Medway. The studio in which I now work is situated in Xian’s most famous complex of textile mills, most of which have now been decommissioned and where most of the workers have been ‘laid off’.
As we all know, since the ‘50s of the last century when the political power of the proletariat was established in China the workers have been the vanguard of the proletariat and have enjoyed an elevated position in society.
Marx’s theory of the Revolution of the Proletariat was first advanced in Britain and Britain is also the place from which the Industrial Revolution burst forth.
I am therefore compelled to conclude that the actual final lot of the Chinese working class is inextricably bound with British history – firstly with the Industrial Revolution and then with the development of the theory of the Revolution of the Proletariat.
Are we able to reflect on the actual final lot of the Chinese working class within a much broader range of world history ? With this in mind I set out to collect the ‘voices [sounds]’ of 1000 Chinese ‘laid off’ workers. And through the GRAIN event I sought to allow a British audience, sited within a decommissioned industrial zone in Britain, to hear the ‘sounds [voices]’ of these Chinese laid off workers.
Currently I have collected the voices of around 150 people who are in fact describing their own stories. As the GRAIN event is 2 hours in length I have selected and linked together the voices of 30 workers (each workers’ piece being around 5 minutes long) to create a sound document to be broadcast at the GRAIN site. The Chinese are of course speaking in Mandarin and will normally remain ‘unintelligible’ to the British lisener. I do not plan to provide translations but hope rather that the audience will experience the abstract sound of the Chinese voice. At the same time I have created an ‘intelligible’ version: from 1 August I have posted a new worker’s story daily onto my blog [url]http://blog.sina.com.cn/yueluping2007 which targets Chinese speaking audiences with this work. In this way I plan to combine ‘intelligible and ‘unintelligible’ versions into the single piece Echo of the Working Class.
