For Performa 11, Zhou Xiaohu (b. 1960, Changzhou, China) will present
Crazy English, a performance-seminar with teacher Li Yang, the founder
of Crazy English, a company specializing in teaching the English
language to thousands of Chinese students by repeating sounds, words,
and sentences in English along with physical gestures. Crazy English
is both a performance and an effective technique that translates
standard American English into theatrical movement. Concerned with
Chinese social behavior, Zhou’s aim, through the simple action of
bringing Crazy English to New York, is to show how something familiar
can instantly be transformed into something alien and foreign, thus
raising questions of legitimacy and the distorted effects of cultural
imperialism.
For Immediate Release, October TK, 2011, New York, NY - Performa is pleased to announce the arrival of Chinese celebrity educator Li Yang as part of Chinese artist Zhou Xiaohu’s Crazy English. As part of Performa 11, the fourth edition of visual art performance biennial in New York City (November 1–21, 2011), this unusual project, which marks the first performance in the United States by Zhou Xiaohu, is a public performance at the Old School Gym in Soho. Titled after the language learning system created by Li Yang, Crazy English blends the art of Zhou Xioahu - with its interest in Western marketing practice in China, and coordinated group activity invented by Li Yang. The resulting event will feature two public seminar-performances in which English will be taught to native speakers using Yang’s methods.
Described by The New Yorker as China’s “Elvis of English”, Li Yang’s Crazy English system has drawn more than 20 million followers, and filled stadiums of 30,000 devotees in China, Japan, and South Korea, all learning to speak English through raucous mass performance. By focusing on pronunciation and memorization paired with wild gestures - rather than traditional grammar-based education - the method has been incredibly successful, drawing tears from his devotees and raising wariness within the Chinese government for its ability to draw massive impassioned crowds.
For Zhou Xiaohu’s contribution to Performa 11 each performance will feature an estimated 200 audience members wearing matching red Crazy English t-shirts. From a stage backed by a large screen projecting his image, Yang will lead the audience through two one-hour-long sessions in a series of coordinated shouts and wild gestures creating a bizarre spectacle in which something as familiar as one’s understanding of their native tongue becomes something complex and foreign.
This intersection is an essential component of Zhou’s artistic practice, which focuses on how history is documented in a digital age where particular details may be fabricated, privileged, altered, or omitted. Considered one of the foremost emerging Chinese contemporary artists, he first rose to prominence in the United States for his crudely-rendered claymation scenes of iconic broadcast moments such as the trial of Saddam Hussein and the collapse of the World Trade Center. His more recent works - as in the case of his 2007–08 video installation Concentration Training Camp - have featured groups of Chinese workers filmed upside down as they enact Amway team building sessions.

For Immediate Release, October TK, 2011, New York, NY - Performa is pleased to announce the arrival of artist Zhou Xiaohu’s Crazy English. As part of Performa 11, the fourth edition of visual art performance biennial in New York City (November 1–21, 2011), this unusual project, which marks the first performance in the United States by Zhou Xiaohu, is a public performance at the Judson Memorial Church. Titled after the language learning system, “Crazy English” blends the art of Zhou Xiaohu - with its interest in Western marketing practice in China, and coordinated group activity of the “Crazy English” classes. The resulting event will feature two public seminar-performances in which English will be taught to native speakers using “Crazy English” methods.
The “Crazy English” system has drawn more than 20 million followers, and filled stadiums of 30,000 devotees in China, Japan, and South Korea, all learning to speak English through raucous mass performance. By focusing on pronunciation and memorization paired with wild gestures - rather than traditional grammar-based education - the method has been incredibly successful, drawing tears from his devotees and raising wariness within the Chinese government for its ability to draw massive impassioned crowds.
For Zhou Xiaohu’s contribution to Performa 11 each performance will feature an estimated 200 audience members wearing matching red “Crazy English” t-shirts. From a stage backed by a large screen projecting his image, a “Crazy English” teacher will lead the audience through two one-hour-long sessions in a series of coordinated shouts and wild gestures creating a bizarre spectacle in which something as familiar as one’s understanding of their native tongue becomes something complex and foreign.
This intersection is an essential component of Zhou Xiaohu’s artistic practice, which focuses on how history is documented in a digital age where particular details may be fabricated, privileged, altered, or omitted. Considered one of the foremost emerging Chinese contemporary artists, he first rose to prominence in the United States for his crudely-rendered claymation scenes of iconic broadcast moments such as the trial of Saddam Hussein and the collapse of the World Trade Center. His more recent works - as in the case of his 2007–08 video installation Concentration Training Camp - have featured groups of Chinese workers filmed upside down as they enact Amway team building sessions.

Critical of the role and influence of visual media in everyday life, Zhou Xiaohu’s (b. 1960, Changzhou, China) practice reflects on how history is documented in a digital age where particular details may be privileged, fabricated, altered, and omitted. Working across performance, photography, installation, sculpture, video, and animation, Zhou’s work has most recently been shown at the 8th Gwangju Biennial (2010); Tate Modern, London (2010); National Art Museum of China, Beijing (2010); Long March Space, Beijing (2010); BOZAR, Brussels (2009), Walsh Gallery, Chicago (2008), and Bizart, Shanghai (2009, 2007).

在中国、日本和韩国，“疯狂英语”吸引了超过2千万名追随者，各大体育馆的集会场场爆满，3万粉丝疯狂涌入，他们都用这种声嘶力竭的集体表演来学习英语。这种方法摈弃传统语法教学，聚焦发音和背诵，伴以夸张的肢体动作，取得了令人难以置信的成功，令无数追随者激动流泪。
在周啸虎的努力下，预计每场表演都将有200名观众身着统一的红色疯狂英语T恤参与其中。“疯狂英语”的一名老师则将连续两场带领观众进行1小时的疯狂体验，各种齐声呐喊、夸张动作将营造出一派奇异景象，诸如母语这种烂熟于心的东西将会变成复杂而陌生的新生事物。
这一互动正是周啸虎艺术实践的主要部分，它聚焦了在数字化时代历史是如何被记录的，而特定细节又是如何被伪造、剥离、改变和忽略的。作为中国当代艺术领域率先崛起的艺术家之一，周啸虎曾以不加渲染的黏土动画再现各种标志性电视场景瞬间——比如萨达姆•侯赛因的审判、世贸中心的倒塌——而首次为美国人所熟知。其最近的作品——2007年到2008年的录像装置《集训营》——让一群专业演员全程倒立着扮演安利驻中国公司的团队培训课程。
