北京艺莱空间EK Project 非常荣幸的宣布，我们将与2011年3月5日至2011年4月20日展出艺术家萧瑟 的个展“萧瑟2011北京油画作品展”。
在这新的一系列的作品里，萧瑟在世俗到超现实主义里无限扩展着他个人的兴趣，解构当代中国男女在空间与态度上的暧昧典型。与他以往作品不同的是，萧瑟将他笔下的那些有血有肉的，具有真实感的人物放在一个超现实的环境里面：那些充斥着水塘，破碎的瓷器，和长梗红花的画面。
萧瑟一直热衷于收集各样的图片，旧的，具有历史意义的；或者当代的，潮流的。在他对Madonna的图片作以挑衅式的运用中，表明了艺术家对欧洲艺术史的鉴赏与研究，而他之所以这样做，并不是要表达他个人对此的崇拜，而更多是出于他不屑的立场。另一方面，他的作品好像不是从古文物中挑选而来，而是个人的影集：一个没有穿上衣的，吸烟的男子和两个坐在船上有着灿烂笑容的小孩，被莫名其妙的放在一张画布上，让人觉得似乎是从不同的地方剪切并胡乱拼贴在一起的。
这是弥漫着挑衅意味的一个系列：在其中一幅作品里，飞鱼悬停在桌子的上方，两只手指掐捏的丰盈的乳房成了视觉的焦点。面对艺术家那些混杂着游离于现实与幻境的作品里，萧瑟用他的作品挑战着我们每一个人对“概念”的接受极限。当我们还在他作品的人物和环境需求的离奇脱节满生疑问的时候，“它们”又明确的表面：拒绝澄清！
萧瑟1970年出生在中国的北京，毕业于中央工艺美术学院。他现在生活和工作于北京。

Xiao Se solo exhibition, Beijing
March 5 - April 20, 2011
EK Projects is pleased to present “Xiao Se’s solo exhibition, Beijing”.
In this new series of paintings, Xiao Se broadens his interest in the mundane-turned-surreal, constructing images of contemporary Chinese men and women in characteristically ambiguous spaces and attitudes. Keeping with the distinguishing traits of his previous work, Xiao Se paints fleshy, photorealistic figures that inhabit surrealist spaces filled with pools of water, broken ceramics, and those trademark long-stemmed red flowers.
Xiao Se is a collector of images, both historical and contemporary. His connoisseurship of European art history shows in his appropriation of Madonna imagery, done often out of irreverence rather than worship. In other cases, Xiao Se’s compositions seem to be made up of figures culled not from Antiquity but a personal photo album. A shirtless, smoking man and two smiling children in a canoe mingle inexplicably on the same canvas, as though cut and pasted from two different sources.
A sense of provocation pervades the series: in one painting, a flying fish hovers over a table while the main attention is on two fingers clutching a breast. Xiao Se tests the limits of our acceptance of conception, mixing reality with illusion. The awkward disconnect between his figures and their environments demands, yet at the same time resists clarification.
Xiao Se was born in Beijing, China in 1970 and graduated from the Central Academy of Art and Design, Beijing, China and the Qinghai University in Xining, China. He currently lives and works in Beijing.
“Xiao Se solo exhibition, Beijing” will be on view at EK Projects from March 5th through April 20th, 2011.
