Liu Shi and Pamela See

On a improvised trip to Chengdu, it was a must for me, as the owner of a recently opened art gallery, to go for “treasure hunting” at the famous Landing artist village (the cradle of Zhou Chunya).
I spent most of my time at Liu Shi’s Studio: I was dazzled by the passioned brush strokes and provocative colors of his paintings. I have been always deeply touched by artists with an instictive, almost savage, creative urge.
Liu Shi’s paintings are not the fruit of brooding or brain cudgelling in search for what to say or how to express it. Unlike many artists, he does not crave for beauty and perfection, in the composition of a painting he follows no rule. Unfettered, unbridled, without full stop, his paintings stimulate expenctancy, stoke up hope.

Pamela See lives in Australia, but her paper-cutting works have revolutionised the concept of chinese traditional paper cutting, from the point of view of either materials or forms. Her works are no more flat, rigid, self-contained; they are three-dimensional, modular, in progress.
She strives for a kind of beauty which is figurative and abstract at the same time, material and empty, unsophisticated yet highly evocative.
Seeing her works, I thought they could be matched with Liu Shi’s paintings: their inspiration is similar, they are attracted by the most negligible forms of life, they share the same concept of natural beauty. But they express all this in a totally different form.
While in the wake of chinese art tradition, these two artists have found a new modern way to convey its meaning.


[花•鸟]二人展前言
刘石+薛美玲(Pamela See)
一个即兴的成都旅行计划,使得一个新开画廊的我,不得不去大名鼎鼎的兰顶艺术村(当年的周春芽的摇篮)去“淘宝”一下。
在那儿,停留最多的时间是在刘石的工作室,他的激情的笔触和刺激的原始色彩,以及堆积如山的画藏,让我的眼睛发出了一线光芒。。。我至今会被艺术家的原始冲动所洋溢出来的才气而感动。刘石的画不象很多艺术家在“苦思冥想,策谋策划”或者在表达什么,在描写什么,在创作什么。他在形势构图上也不拘格式,不求“完美”。他的画是自由的,是没有句号的。所以他给我希望,给我期待。我期待他的成熟,他的新的冲动。
薛美玲(Pamela See)是一个居住澳大利亚的女艺术家,她的剪纸无论从材料上和形势上,打破了中国传统民间剪纸的概念,它们不仅是平面的,也是三维的,是可以组合的,可以延续的。她追求的美感是具象与抽象的,质感与空间的。她的情怀是美丽的,质朴的,异国的。
我一看到她的作品,就想起和刘石的画“配对”。他们在题材上是共通的,他们关注的是渺小的生命,自然的美丽,但他们的表达方式又是截然不同的。
他们让我想起古代文人的情怀,是以更幽雅的方式来表达他们的存在。
