安德烈.布特兹(André Butzer) Biography

Butzer was born in Stuttgart, Germany and lives in Rangsdorf by Berlin. He makes semi-abstract paintings that feature cartoon-like characters and objects.[1] Butzer is interested in the comic genre, whose ambivalence comes on the one hand from a childlike inflation of effect and on the other hand from an artificial lifelessness, set beyond morality.[2] Butzer’s work has been called Science-Fiction-Expressionism,[3] he is influenced by James Ensor, Willem DeKooning, and Phillip Guston.[4] In 1997, he helped to found Akademie Isotrop in Hamburg.[5]
Butzer is an outstanding representative of contemporary German expressionism. He has been painting since 1994. In 1997 he was among those painters who established Academy “Isotrop” (Hamburg), a student self-educational community. In 2001 Butzer founded "Institut für SDI-Traumforschung". He is also a co-editor of the “Isotrops” journal. It is from the experience of collective painting practices where Andre Butzer deduces his painting system. He was engaged with post-non-objectivism of Albert Oehlen, a concept that stands for ‘renewal’ of abstract art. In his illustrated visions Butzer blends both trivial and historically important references.
He shows his self-invented characters as synonyms of those who virtually inhabited this or that historical epoch. Andre Butzer has already managed to show the pieces of his own in numerous galleries and museums all over Europe. The artist is expected to visit the opening event as well as Max Hetzler and Guido Baudach, well-known German gallerists

André Butzer: Nicht fürchten! Don’t be scared!

Metro Pictures

André Butzer’s second New York show at Metro Pictures “Nicht fürchten!Don´t be scared!” features a group of new, closely related works thatfocus on the “formal event” of painting. By emphasizing shapes andfields of color, these works possess a less linear take on the usualmotifs in his work—colorful hybrids of abstraction and cartoonfiguration featuring a family of characters inspired by art history, comics, politics and animation. Both sinister and amusing, theseelegant compositions balance large, vaguely recognizable biomorphicforms within chaotic, multicolored backgrounds or heavily texturedmonochromatic fields.

“Blue Smurf” presents the most identifiable image in the exhibitionwith the cartoon character embedded in a complex field of thickpaint—the Smurf’s wry smile acknowledges his victory over abstraction. In the reductive “Entombment of Winnie the Pooh” a Pooh-yellow blob istaken to his grave in the night; a sacrificial pop martyr intended tounite art history. “Favorite Painting of Paul Cezanne” and “Aladdin andthe Magic Oil Lamp” balance Butzer’s use of maximal, colorfulabstraction and a newfound spatiality to celebrate thePost-Impressionist master and to “have something truly colorful andtender like a big Disney movie”, respectively.

The title of the exhibition is taken from a progression of threepaintings by the same name. In the first, a thickly painted fleshcolored kite shape (a fish? a piece of meat?) emerges from a web ofbright, gestural painting. The second follows the same format with anenormous black spider shape prominently taking over the canvas. Finally, in the third, the black color has power over the whole canvas,over-painting the thick shapes and colors in evidence underneath.
