1944年出生于德国科隆，坎迪德在德国是一位非常有身份的女性摄影师，她是德国著名夫妻拍档摄影师 Bernd and Hilla Becher 的学生，她的父亲 Werner Hofer 是德国一位富有争议性的记者，曾经在电视台担任了34年的栏目主持，但在被揭发了他曾经是名非常激进的纳粹宣传记者后被迫辞职。
1998年坎迪德说：“空间让我着迷的是--它是那些不同时代混合在一起后留下的东西，看每个不同的年代是怎么去表现自己的。”这句话综合并指示了她多年来的创作主题：不同时代的重叠可以通过建筑和室内设计风格上的无连续性中印证。
自1979年，坎迪德开始拍摄一些公共空间或半公共空间的照片-如：候客厅、酒店大堂、温泉区、银行、教堂、戏院、图书馆、博物馆等。这些空旷的空间摄影，一般没有任何人类的气息，遗留下的是诡异、冷冰冰的为了群体文化记忆而去设计的建筑而已。最初她回避这些人的存在，觉得自己的摄影是对这些私人空间的介入。1972年，她开始了一个维持了7年的项目- 《德国的土耳其人》，1975年在她的个展上展出了这个利用投影来呈现的作品。1979年，这个作品，延伸至两个投影，呈现《德国的土耳其人和土耳其的土耳其人》，照片内容为这些人的日常生活和他们在每个城市的不同关系，这个系列很多照片拍摄了土耳其的商店和售货员还有他们的家庭生活照等。是坎迪德以往回避摄影人类的一个转型。

The SCAD exhibitions department presents "Infinite Moments" an exhibition of photographs by artist Candida Hofer. The selected works portray monumental interiors of cultural public spaces such as museums, theaters and palaces that are at once unoccupied and yet hauntingly affected by their former inhabitants. In careful compositions that are formally alluring, infinitely detailed and luminous with light, Hofer's photographs transcend pure documentation and heighten our perceptions of time and space.
