Taking the Stage OVER
Bestue Vives work screening: 18:00-18:45
Artist talk:18:45:19:30

About the Artists:
Bestue Vives have been working as a team since 2002. The result of their collaborative work are mainly formal performances, in which they have developed an system for approaching different realities, from the most intimate scale (Actions in the Body) to larger social environments (Actions in Mataró), and even the macrostructural levels (Actions in the Universe). In these performances they strike up a dialog with several subjects extracted from the recent history of art, focusing on the 20th and 21st century, in which they add concepts of their own imagination.

Their work has been shown in Making Worlds at the 53rd Venice Biennale among many other international exhibitions.

David Bestue and Marc Vives will have a research visit in Shanghai for the piece that will be produced next year as a part of project “Taking The Stage Over”. The collective will give a public talk presenting their practice and screen sections of their work at Min Sheng Art Museum

Taking the Stage Over

Date: October 2010 ongoing project

Project Concept:
The artists in the project “Taking the Stage Over” will develop their own projects related to the stage and its various manifestations.

Introduction:
Performance art today largely coincides with the sensibilities of communication culture. From live DJ shows to installation-based work, the term ‘performance’ has been used to describe many aspects of art today. This has introduced multiple complex meanings and possible viewpoints into the analysis of what performance art is today.

But one thing is certain, performance art continues to be a driving force in contemporary art practice, and is one of the main catalysts for the development of new ideas today. The practice of performance art largely circumvents the limitations that are inherent to many other art forms. Furthermore, it is deeply intertwined with many other areas of contemporary art culture, making it difficult to clearly define it as a singular practice.

The proposed series of performances and culminating exhibition, intend to examine and present new tendencies in performance art today from a global perspective, including central figures from the art world and popular culture that question the traditional notion of performance art.

For more than a decade, performance art has been marginalized by many art institutions Consequently there are increasingly fewer platforms that are willing to explore this field. “Taking the Stage Over” aims to raise awareness and open up a discussion about this phenomenon at a local level in China, showing the current state of performance today and forecasting its possible developments in the future. In addition, this project will for the first time bring together into this discussion global aspects of performance-in-art, including those from Asia and the Pacific region. Each artist's/collective's project contains site-specific elements.

Structure of the project:
Commencing in October 2010, the first artist’s performance piece will be presented on a stage in a venue in Shanghai. Additionally, there will be an artist’s lecture organized performance, including screenings.

Project has been initiated by Biljana Ciric, independent curator based in Shanghai
