North Korea is a country shrouded in mystery and intrigue. As the most shut off country in the world, we know very little about the art scene there. Although the works of this exhibition is the product of ethnic North Korean artist Nam HyoJun, don’t expect to know the ins-and-outs of North Korea’s art scene just yet. Nam was born and raised in Japan after his grandfather fled the country to escape the North Korean war. Lacking the patriotism and close national ties as a native North Korean, Nam’s work depict N. Korea from an outsider’s perspective, depicting issues deemed as “taboo” in North Korea.
