Feng Mengbo: Re-Start

DATE: July 25, 2009 - August 30, 2009
VENUE: UCCA Nave
Curated by David Spalding

This exciting exhibition takes the form of a newly-realized, interactive video game that combines and animates elements from the artist’s previous paintings and new media works. Players will move up and down the darkened space of the UCCA Nave as they engage in various battles and challenges through a complex system of sensors and digital projections. The culmination of 15 years of Feng Mengbo's practice, this customized video game playfully speaks to China's recent history and its contemporary conditions.

Feng Mengbo (b. 1966, Beijing, lives and works in Beijing) graduated from Beijing's Central Academy of Fine Arts before going on to become China's most prominent new media artist. In addition to creating interactive works such as custom-designed video games, his practice includes a variety of media, including painting and prints. The artist's work has been presented in some of the most important exhibitions worldwide, including the Venice Biennale (1993), the Lyon Biennial (1997), the Kwangju Biennial (1997), Documenta (1997 and 2002), the Johannesburg Biennial (1997), ISEA (1998), Ars Electronica (2004), the Shanghai Biennial (2004) and the Guangzhou Triennial (2002 and 2008). Solo exhibitions of his work have been held at DIA Center for the Arts (New York), the Renaissance Society (Chicago), MOCA Taipei, ShanghART gallery (Shanghai) and Chambers Fine Art (Beijing) among others.
