Transmundane
——Yang Qian Solo Exhibition
By the independent curator, Huang Du
Yang Qian has been taking one year for having the very experimental work " Transmundane " Done. " Transmundane" has two manifestations. One is beyond what is usual, ordinary, regular. The other is beyond daily experience. From this point of view, the artist broke the too personal pattern in the past exhibitions, using the more open art concept. He mixed many artistic language from architecture, literature, performance stage, media and sports goods, and other materials as elements for his artwork, that provides more meaningful contents.

As we all know, Yang Qian spent three to four years doing experiments on new painting and installation art, he had a big breakthrough in his art. However, in this exhibition, Yang Qian didn't regardness the technique, but use all the technique serves for abundant concepts. Let the art simply be itself. His art based on artistic imagining, esthetics, and social atmosphere. In this way of thinking, the artist focus on specific issues, analyzing the connection of the daily events. Yang Qian has his own esthetic sense about the society. He doesn't step in the most popular complete abstract art in today's China. Comparing to his past work Shower Room Series, Moveable Painting and Two–Layer Painting, his experimental installation art Shredded Paper of "Nanjing triennium" in 2008 which was a breakthrough of his art. His latest Shower Room Series implicated privacy and obscure world; the later works Moveable Painting and Two–Layer Painting based on the effect by moveable images reflects the problems such as family, life and conflict among countries. Since 2008, he found a special medium, paper turned to shredded paper which was crushed through shredder, it has another visual image with the special concept. He made Renminbi, dollar and Greenspan from shredded paper. On the one hand, he showed his worry and critique about the economic recession leads global economic collapse and social unrest. He made US dollar and Chinese Yuan Renminbi into 1001 nominal value. The expanding value predicts there is a risk of uncertain inflation in the financial system. The number "1001" has two symbolic manifestations. it implicates from zero to infinite; also reflects economic recession pulled the world into the abyss. On the other hand, using shredded paper of financial magazines to consist the legendary Greenspan, it's a sarcasm about the former U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman.

Yang Qian used all the different mediums, because he stood in the position of suspicion and criticism of the media world as the illusion of non-material things. Today, in our life, the media's influence is everywhere - whatever in the political and economic areas, or in the commerce and culture have the inductivity, dominative and controling functions. At this point, he regards the media as a soft and transparent violence; it plays the functions of exhorter, pacificator, control some power. When people live in this kind of soft media, they hardly see thing clearly, and lose their vigilance and judgement. These areYang Qian's critical perspective about the media.

In another installation art The Tower of Babel. Yang Qian's idea came from the Book of Genesis and Bible. He put shredded paper from various books and magazines to consist a abstract imaginary tower. What does The Tower of Babel mean? According to the Book of Genesis. The people decided their city should have a tower so immense that it would have "its top in the heavens, and making a name for themselves. God, seeing what the people were doing, confounded their languages and scattered the people throughout the earth. However, the people didn’t yield to the punishment from God, they created their heroic cause…the creation of many languages makes translation necesasy. The people challenged God. They translate all kinds of languages for the people communicating more convenient. Thanks to the translation, each nation has its cultural wealth with its special character, preserving each nation’s culture well. For this reason, the tower of Babel seems to have a natural relation with translation. The translator works to restore communication when God destroyed them, thereby working against God. Later, this great cause attracted the French philosopher Jacques Derrida's concern, he had been thinking about “translation”. He considered when God confounded the people’s languages, turned over the task of the translation to the people. God, at the same time impose and forbids translatinon. Ultimately, the peopl have cultural differences, which lead conflicts.Yang Qian used shredded paper as medium to build a tower of Babel, his aim is using the religious symbol to reflect the disputes of our world, and the world is absurd, the financial empire attempt to build an ideal tower of Babel, but it's a disillusionary tower. From the artist view, the media cooperate with some interest groups weaving a fantasy world. Except the critical thinking about the reality, Yang Qian's concept of the work also implicates the unharmonic relationship between people and creature, in addition people and environment. When the human grasp the beautiful new life, they are losing something as costs. In other words, the people always have the conflict between the ideal and reality.

Yang Qian filled his personal creativity and elements from daily life into his art. He didn't simply bring or copy the original daily forms, but from his deep reflections of daily life. His work gives the viewer a feeling mixing with the familiar and strange; also created sort of aspects showing extraordinary daily life. Let the viewer to imagine, associate and experience something related to society and culture. The concept of the work has different meanings, viewer can interpret freely...

All these are the significances of Yang Qian's work Transmundane.
