2017年惠特尼双年展(Whitney Biennial 2017)日前在纽约惠特尼美国艺术博物馆举行。
共有63位艺术家及艺术小组参加了本届双年展,他们的作品以各种各样的形式表现出来:从绘画与装置,到活动与视频游戏设计。这届双年展恰逢一个充满了种族紧张关系、经济不平等以及两极分化的政治的时期。在整场展览中,参展艺术家促使我们去思考这些现实情况是如何影响我们对自我与社会的认识的。
惠特尼双年展自上世纪30年代开始就一直致力于展现美国的当代艺术,并且总是以时代思潮及创新精神为目标。正如双年展新闻稿里所写的那样,本届展览在一个充满了危机的时期里举行;然而,它的策划时间却远远早于美国总统大选,甚至早于英国脱欧,因此,这场特别的展览可以被理解为是一个在其中特朗普还没有当选美国总统的世界的产物。在策展人Christopher Y. Lew与Mia Locks的引导下,本届双年展拥有一种草率的、会令人联想到车间的、更加基本和质朴的感觉。这不仅体现在参展艺术家的数量上,也体现在有许多更加年轻和不知名的艺术家参与其中。很难去精确地定位本届展览的首要主题,这就像是两位策展人以他们自己的方式将焦点带回到了艺术本身。
