关于乘飞机出游的事，我们理所当然地认为这是非常荒谬的。我们勇敢地坐在一个“金属管”中，在离地3万英尺的高空以每小时500英里的速度横穿空间，周围全都是我们可能再也不会碰面的陌生人。飞机上还有一些不成文的、希望坐在自己旁边的陌生人能够遵守的规矩：请不要交谈，不要移动，不要起身…基本上就是尽量保持一种似乎自己是不存在的状态。在这些束缚之下，我们在飞行中的飞机上无非只能睡觉、阅读、看着窗外或是观看那些内容寡淡的电影。除非你是尼娜（Nina Katchadourian）。
Lavatory Self-Portrait in the Flemish Style #18-19, 2011在尼娜（Nina Katchadourian）近日于Catherine Clark画廊举办的个展“Seat Assignment”中，她展出了近两年来在70多次航班上创作的一系列作品。许多艺术家在得知他们的工作室空间仅限于飞机座位和飞机上的洗手间这样的弹丸之地后会感到很惊恐，但尼娜（Nina Katchadourian）却将能够“随身携带工作室带”看作是一次有实质意义的机会。仅仅利用她的照相手机与手边现成的材料，这位艺术家创作出了各种风格的作品，从即兴创作的弗兰德斯风格的古典肖像画到微型的风景画等等。
正如这场展览的名字所暗示的那样，“Lavatory Self-Portrait in the Flemish Style”系列使用了诸如充气颈枕、餐巾等尼娜（Nina Katchadourian）可以获得的材料创作出了弗兰德斯风格的自画像。旅行杂志为艺术家提供了一些更为丰富的材料。来自“Landscapes”系列中的一件作品就利用了黑色的毛衣线头将一座被雪覆盖了的山头转变成了冒烟的火山。在“Disasters”系列中，面包屑又变成了冲毁了道路的滑坡。黑色线头同时还出现在了系列作品“Birds of New Zealand”中：它装饰了那些异域之鸟的脑袋和身体，赋予了它们更精致的外观。这些作品最奇特的地方还在于它们看起来都如此可信。尽管道路上的石块很明显并不是真正的石块而只是面包屑，又或者现实生活中的鸟的头部显然不可能有腰果状的附属物，但这些作品都产生了一种真正的暂停感，让人们觉得它有可能是真实的——尽管这是荒谬的。
尼娜（Nina Katchadourian）将大多数的我们认为是幽闭、无聊而且沉闷的状态看作是一次挑战，同时强调了飞行过程中美妙而又平凡的方面。使这场展览得以成型的幽默感与即兴创作的天赋很好地例证了艺术家可以为自己设定一定的参量、然后用这些参量来创作复杂而且精致的作品。
