丹尼尔·利伯斯金的为期六年、耗资8,500万美元的德雷斯顿军事历史博物馆改造工程本周完工投入使用，该馆称为东西德统一以来第一个开幕的新建战争博物馆。
利伯斯金的设计最吸引人的地方，是从博物馆的新古典主义外立面破墙而出的99英尺高、14,700吨重的玻璃和钢铁犄角。和它所处的城市一样，博物馆是战前和战后的一个交集，是一座135年的老建筑经过当代介入后的成果，和利伯斯金在柏林的犹太博物馆所作的金属饰面和棱角轮廓异曲同工。主建筑在1873年修建时是一座军火库，1945年2月盟军空袭后毁掉全城80％的建筑，它是少数几个幸存下来的建筑之一。
“我想制造一种醒目的中断，一次根本上的错位，穿透军火库这个历史背景，创造新的体验，”利伯斯金在一份声明中说。“建筑应该直面暴力、军事历史和城市命运的组成方式这种最深刻的公共问题。”
目前博物馆已经遭到一部分批评家的反对，原因有许多；有的认为这种对历史建筑的现代介入是一种冒犯，有的反对博物馆的强烈反战情绪，还认为它对大屠杀的体现不够。
博物馆收藏的10,500件文物中最古老的可以追溯到十四世纪，展示了那个时代的粗糙武器，接下来还有二战时期的V2火箭，一直延伸到当前，包括了目前还被派往阿富汗的德国联邦国防军（Bundesehr）。展览根据内部的房间结构进行分配：老建筑主要是历史性、纪年性的展览，而玻璃扩建工程是有主题的，包括“战争与受难“和”时尚与军事”等。许多展览和死亡有关：一个开枪自尽的士兵的头骨，同时展出的还有他的遗书；还有一件装置艺术作品通过把路过的访客的影子固定到墙上，模拟原子弹爆炸后的痕迹；还有令人作呕的纳粹宣传片。
博物馆的一大亮点是通过那个玻璃和钢质楔子的观象平台来看城市风景。德雷斯顿就在脚下，和别的博物馆一样，它是战前遗产和战后进步的一个混合物。
