Star 85 Art Space is a newly established gallery in Taipei dedicating to the promotion of Chinese Contemporary Art. An opening exhibition of post-Photography, “Process & Expression,” will be held on September 30, 2006, to display not only static images but also presentations of video live interaction, the artists' creative processes, as well as the final works of art.

The four participating artists, Ma Liuming, Wang Qing-song, Miao Xiaochun and Yi Deer, are extremely key and influential artists in the field of post-photography. Compared with the original form of photography, post-Photography carries a contemporary nature in its art language. Adopting techniques such as performing arts, painting, computer processing and modern photographic images, post-photography no longer exists in the traditional sense of image recording; instead it utilizes all photography-related elements, from materials, mediums to concepts. It is a realistic but virtual art form, and this is also the central theme of this exhibition--the idea of expressing performance art in the Chinese context and in Chinese post-Photography.

First proposed by the West, "the Other" is a concept opposed to "the Self", and it extends beyond its philosophical origin to be used as a metaphor in the modern sense. Coincidentally in the works of all four artists, we see such an "Other," meaning that we see the images of the artists (known as "the Other") presented by the artists themselves in various ways. Here the artist assumes multiple roles, both as a director and an actor, watching and being watched at the same time, forming a superposition from certain visual angle. In other words, "the Self" is also "the Other," and one's views on the others are also reflections of oneself.
When examined as art, their works reveal not only the rhetoric of the images, but also a modern man's observations and reflections of the contemporary culture, self identity and the ideological values of the modern society.

The concept is beautiful yet brutal, portrayed in the photographic form--in Process & Expression.
