CHEN ZHEN
29 september - 13 december 2010

The Musée Guimet associates itself with the Centre National des Arts Plastiques (CNAP).
On a regular basis, these two institutions will display, among the permanent collections of the Musée Guimet, monographic sets of Asian artists, or artists influenced by Asian and Oriental art, from the collections of the CNAP.
For this first edition, five major works of the French-Chinese artist Chen Zhen are displayed.
With this event, the Musée Guimet takes part, for the first time, to the Nuit Blanche event (Saturday, October 2).

BIOGRAPHY

Chen Zhen (1955-2000) was born in Shanghai. Naturalized French, he comes from a medical family. Acknowledged worldwide as a major artist, he has held exhibitions in many contemporary art museums in Europe, the USA, Canada, Japan, Korea, China, Israel, and he is a frequent guest of the biennial of Lyons (1996), Shanghai (1997), Venice (1999 and 2009). Most recently, an exhibition of his works was shown at the Musée d’Art Moderne of Paris.

FEATURED WORKS

Set in the Musée Guimet, the works of Chen Zhen forge a unique relationship, spiritual and formal, with those of the permanent collections. Le Berceau (The Cradle), refers to the permanence of the cycle of life, while Round Table, shown in the museum’s rotunda, calls forth the themes of communion, unity and harmony, thus referring to the "Guanxi". The chairs and table symbolize an ideal human order, emphasizing the ideas of mutual respect, equality and multiculturalism. The notions of transition rites, purification and simplicity are all paths to the understanding of the displayed works, such as La Stèle/le Cercueil (The Stone / The Coffin), L’hibernation (The Hibernation /The Divagation) and L’autel n°9 (altar No. 9).
