Boaz Zippor Born in Israel 1972. Educated in Milano, Italy, majoring in industrial design and visual communications. Was founder and managing director of several multimedia and design companies in Italy and Israel, before moving to Thailand in 2003. in Thailand has been an art-director and creative-director for multinational companies. after several exhibitions of mixed-media and large scale prints, debuting in a solo-exhibition in Milano in 2001, is now concentrating full-time on fine-art photography, and runs a private photography studio and gallery in Sapan-kwai. since coming to Thailand has been actively involved in several educational programs for under-privileged children and is the Europe-editor of LAW magazine, a publication dedicated to moral and ethical leadership models. married to Toto, a Thai painter.

In 1966, Solange Brand was 20 years old. Barely out of high school, she got a job offer to work at the French Embassy in Beijing. It was the beginning of the Great Cultural Revolution. She circulated in the city and took color photographs. Having no message to deliver, she photographed what she saw, in an honest and candid way, despite the thousands of eyes thrown upon her - a young Western girl in the middle of a crowd was at that time truly unusual. Forgotten in a drawer for nearly 40 years, these images are now a valuable testimony: for outside the official propaganda, there are few documents relating to this event, especially, in color.

m97 Gallery Shanghai is pleased to present two separate solo exhibitions of works by photography artists Lu Jun and Sun Ji.

Lu Jun's large-scale photography works use the three fundamental elements of Chinese landscape paintings - water, ink, and paper - combined with techniques of modern photography to create poetic landscapes that flow in both form and color. Water and ink captured in photographs, and under the artist's control, blend together in dreamy clouds of color reinterpreting and advancing one of the most iconic forms of Chinese traditional art. The exhibition features works from his most recent series: "Chinese Real Estate Dream" (2006), "How Far From Us" (2007) and "The Scenery That I’ve Seen" (2008), which lead the viewer into a realm of more abstract landscapes of ink, water, paper and photography. Lu Jun lives and works in Zhuhai (Guangdong) and Beijing.

The works in Sun Ji's Memory City are architectural collages that speak of urban transformation as destruction and displacement of the old must make way for the new; memories recreated that are both meant to be forgotten and remembered. Sun Ji uses his camera to create hyperrealist collages of industrial landscapes, factory facades, water towers, smoke stacks and abandoned buildings that result in works of striking scale and formality. Recreating impressions and memories from his childhood, the young Shanghainese artist began in 2005 by carefully assembling single portraits of buildings to create massive black and white compositions that surpass the physical limits of possibility but in the viewer's imagination renders an almost plausible behemoth construction, alive yet forever a part of Shanghai's history. Sun Ji lives and works in Shanghai.

FRANK STANDKE « Paris, peindre a l’appareil photo »

Frank Standke lived for two years in Paris and took many portraits of the Parisian metropolis. His pictures are not created with a paint-brush and colour palette but with the lens of his panoramic camera. Using a rotating lens, he captures the world in a different way and creates a style closer to painted pictures than photographs – sometimes precise, sometimes blurred. Once the impressions of the pictures start to mix with our own memories, they are not more limited to the edges of the canvas. Paris provides fascination for people who have seen it as well as for those who like to see it. Frank Standke’s pictures do reflect this fascination. All pictures are authentic.

ifa gallery presents ‘Portraits of China’, a reflection on the pluralities of China; of the men and women who make what China is today: a country of many faces.
A seller of kebabs, a young factory worker in Guangdong, a psychoanalyst in Chengdu, a farmer from Ningxia or a rock star… the lens of Anais Martane’s Mamiya captures them subtly and sensitively, telling each of their unique stories.
Thoughtful and precise, her work pays tribute to the various characters that are uncovered in this exhibition.

"I record those young people who are future leaders of this fanciful world. It is not a critique; instead, it is a documentation for those who, in the future, wish to look back and rediscover this fragment of their lives where youth and naivety triumphs over fear." – quoted from Xiong Lijun's artist statement.

Xiong Lijun has always worked on depicting activities and phenomenon of contemporary society and its most vibrant and youthful generation. This exhibition, she continued her journey in capturing these future leaders in her paintings and sculptures. They live in an era of vast choices of commercial goods, unfiltered new media influences and seek obsessively for so-called individuality. They are indifferent and insensitive to current affairs and to avoid reality, they indulge themselves in the hassle-bustle of the city. In a time of countless options, these young people are constantly making choices which even they, are lost in their own decisions; they fight to disguise the emptiness that erode through their mind and soul with a seemingly carefree façade.

Xiong Lijun expresses her interpretation of the hesitation and hollowness which occupy most of the youths in today’s society with dramatic colours and movements in the paintings. These also further illustrate the lack of connection these young people have towards reality and reflect on how they over self-indulge in consumerism in order to escape.

In this exhibition, Xiong Lijun acts as a narrator, using her works to portray a story of emotionally disconnected youths in a world filled with consumerism. To the artist, this confusion will not be lost with time, when this generation matures; this phenomenon will be replaced by an even younger crowd. Instead of criticizing such phenomenon, she simply wishes for her works to act as a documentation for those who, in the future, wish to look back and rediscover this fragment of their lives where youth and naivety triumphs over fear.

Get Real! - Group Exhibition
Art Scene Warehouse’s latest exhibition “Get Real!” features the surreal artworks of Du Meng, Du Xinjian, Feng Dakang, Xue Jiye, Zhou Fan and Zhou Weihua. Du Meng’s absurd compositions feature a tree growing am elephants with a deep-sea diver inside, a deer with a three-headed bird on top with a steam vent and a scuba diver for legs and a Shakespearean-looking man with a box for a body, which contains a rabbit and miniature men performing various activities. Du Xinjian’s reality-looking pieces feature a silent girl standing on a tree-branch and holding an unusual looking fish and a man covering his eyes while a fish is flying in front of him. Feng Dakang’s compositions feature crumbling, yet elegant buildings, constructed at impossible angles while flowers or planes co-exist, abiding by the normal laws of physics. Xue Jiye’s imaginary scenes consist of 2 battling men on separate podiums, unable to reach each other – so one of the men has torn off his own arm in order to use it as a weapon against the other. Zhou Weihua’s positive scenes juxtapose large-sized figures with small ones floating in the clear-blue-sky backgrounds. What is real? And how can we get real? The artists in this exhibition show us new ways of perceiving reality.

Cheng Xiangjun is a well-renowned lacquer painter who employs techniques of oil painting while pushing the tradition of lacquer art in his work. In a style that echoes abstract expressionism, Cheng’s art breaks the conventional mold of lacquer paintings, employing abstract images, geometric shapes and colors that layer and leap from the wood canvas.

"Cheng Xiangjun: Solo Exhibition" opens at twocities gallery on Saturday, April 18, from 4 to 6 pm. The exhibit runs until May 10.

Roger Moore is not 007 in the James Bond movies. He was in 1944 a US Navy Serviceman in his early twenties, who by chance was serving his tour of duty in China. The young man always brought his camera with him, recording images of Shanghai after the War of Resistance against Japan in 1945.

These 6-decade old photos of Roger Moore, now an 84-year-old man, are now being featured in the exhibition called “1945•Shanghai”, to be held from 18 April to 17 May at The Pottery Workshop on 220 Taikang Road, Lu Wan District. The exhibition is jointly presented by Hong Kong’s Lumenvisum and The Pottery Workshop Shanghai, with support from Fringe Shanghai.
These photos tell the moving stories of a generation of Chinese people. When VJ day was being celebrated in 1945, Roger Moore focused not on the celebrations, to the surprise of many, but concentrated on capturing the ordinary people of Shanghai.
The curator’s notes put it this way: “These people suffered many hardships during the war, but the expressions of courage and optimism on their faces were totally contrary to Roger’s expectations. Even after 64 years, Roger can still recall how he was astonished by the faces of the Chinese people, so maybe it is the reason why he wants to hold the exhibition in China.”
As Roger explains, “The Japanese had bombed Shanghai unmercifully when they invaded and had treated the Chinese badly during the occupation. Under these circumstances, I expected to find the local Chinese inhabitants a discouraged beaten lot. To the contrary, their demeanor and resolve was astounding.” These ordinary Chinese retained a positive attitude which, when shown through Roger’s camera lens, reflected the integrity and persistent faith of a nation during the tragic war years.
“1945•Shanghai” will be open to the public from 10am to 6pm from Monday to Saturday, April 18 – May 17 at The Pottery Workshop.

Hao Shiming - Series II - Solo Exhibition
Hao Shiming, one of China's most talented "gong bi" Chinese ink painters has developed "Series II", a new series of works based on an imaginary theme of vines and thatch intertwining and coming to life. The series began with a woman, sitting on a chair made of thatch, while pieces of the material broke off and began re-combining into birds. This developed into a whole "branch" of the artist's works being devoted to the newly formed imaginary flying thatch-birds. Hao's technique is very strong, pieces of thatch are interwoven freely, as if flowing together, requiring the artist to produce "gong bi" ink lines meticulously. It is unusual for an artist to be so experimental in such a medium, as once paint is put onto the paper, it cannot be changed. Hao Shiming makes something so difficult look easy. One should not miss the details of Hao's paintings and examine up-close how the artist has created flying creatures from criss-crosses of thatch-work seemingly-impossibly combined.

James Cohan Gallery Shanghai is pleased to present an exhibition by four international artists. Eastlink Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Transforming the Common - duo exhibition of Hans Wilschut (NL) and Shao Wenhuan (CN). Coming from different countries and carrying different backgrounds, these two photographers both traveled to places at the other end of the world. During the change of each other’s geographic positions, new perspectives were formed and representations as you’ve never seen before were created. Using both photography but leading different art techniques, they captured common scenes, either city landscapes or peoples but from a new angle, so the viewer is lead into specific questioning.

Shan Sa is a Beijing-born, internationally-renowned writer and painter based in Paris. “Time in West, Light in East” marks the first time that the works of Shan Sa will be exhibited in China, having traveled through Japan, New York, and Paris.

Having had her first writings published at the age of 8, Shan Sa’s recent novel, “The Girl Who Played Go”, has been acclaimed worldwide. Often compared to Zao Wou-Ki, the great contemporary Chinese painter, Shan Sa follows in the footsteps of the most foremost artists and is a former student of Balthus.

Shan Sa’s works combine poetry and painting, rejuvenating abstract forms inspired by the energies of East and West. Her vibrant pieces are explosions of color and movement, created using a combination of traditional methods of ink on rice paper and western oil painting, supported by expressive poems written by the artist herself.The exhibition of “Time in West, Light in East” offers readers and art collectors the chance to know Shan Sa and her rich universe where the mystery of the Far East meet with the flamboyance of the West.

Qiu Shengxian’s “Buddha” and “Heart of the Sun” Series By Outstanding Art “Buddha” Series China practices the Mahayana or “big wheel” form of Buddhism, in contrast with the more Traditional Theravada Buddhism of South-East Asia. In the Mahayana school, the fate of the individual is linked to the fate of others and Buddha continues to offer spiritual help to those seeking nirvana. Chinese people have always loved the image of the fat and happy Buddha Mayetta, who brings harmony and prosperity and chases away sickness and evil. “Heart of the Sun series” Chinese people used to refer to Mao Zedong as “Heart of the Sun” because of his central position in their world, almost like a modern-day Buddha Mayetta. Even today, Mao Zedong is not only a political figure in the eyes of artists; he is also an emotional and aesthetic symbol. For those like Qiu Shengxian that lived through the historical era of Mao, it was an unforgettable experience of particularly profound significance. The rich and full compositions that the artist has created in his “Buddha” and “Heart of the sun” series reflect the Mahayana Buddhist philosophy. Qiu Shengxian fills his Buddha and Mao images with mother and son figures, representing the most beautiful form, that of the human body, and the most selfless love, that between a mother and her child. The viewer can clearly sense the powerful benevolence of these unconventional images. In his long career, the artist has perfectly mastered the disciplines of comic book creation, pottery, sculpture, calligraphy and Chinese traditional painting. By embracing these elements, breaking them down and combining them, he has created his own artistic symbols. In this perfect combination of form and content, Qiu Shengxian celebrates his traditional Chinese cultural heritage, using it as a foundation to create something new and uniquely different.

In Jin Shan’s solo exhibition, the artist fabricates his show around an abstract martyr - Stephen (the Protomartyr of Christianity). In the show, the abstract martyr is materialized into a herd of persecuted sheep, the latter being imagined as Stephen, the martyr of reality.

The exhibition is divided into five individual parts telling one story: sheep persecuted, sheep educated and sheep’s fight-back, integrating animation, performance and installation. The visitors are guided by the artist’s designed route into a testing field for the power-creating martyr, which humorously discusses the topics of how the public obtains power and the destiny of a martyr.

This is the inaugurating exhibition of ddm new site. Stephen the Speculator is sure to bring visitors a unique art experience.

In the spirits of Spring, Vanguard Gallery invites you to join Japanese artist Aki Lumi's abstract world. This coming exhibition in April shares with you Aki's three paper art and photography collections: "The Garden," "Mechanic" and "Trace."
Born in Tokyo, Aki Lumi currently lives in Paris and is a member of art ensemble "Les KiKi". His works display a same core message in diversified ways-that is an independent system, or "regulation" which differs from the existing material system and is created by Aki himself. Produced in aid of compasses and rulers, Aki's art pieces exhibit complicated yet regulars lines, integrated tight with each other. Discarding the traditional perspective representation, Aki starts from anywhere in the frame. In his photography collections, "photo" are no longer the results of photography but an ultra extensity that Aki creates on computer.
Aki Lumi's works break your conventional way of observing and thinking and recompose the two-dimensional world everyone sees. It is a difficult feeling to describe: there are two or more parallel worlds co-existing on same dimension. They're harmonious but harsh, natural but illusory, chaotic but solid. When this static illustration on paper is decoded by your brain, it'll be interfered by the accepted knowledge of viewers, thus standing out. Are they organic or inorganic? regular or irregular? It is the stereotype break-through under unconscious brain conditions that Aki Lumi's art pieces are challenging.

"Mindscape of the 21st Century" focuses on the visual presentation of mind-map of artists of what Korean Contemporary Art is in the millennium. In the Western concept ‘mind’ is inner-activities happening in your brain or head but in the Eastern concept; ‘mind’ is inner activities happening both in your head and heart. Therefore this group exhibition is very much about what Korean artists think and feel.

Korean art boasts over 5000 year’s history. The traditional craftsmanship and philosophy in art making are still descended to the contemporary art. Unlike other emerging contemporary art sectors in Asia such as Chinese, Japanese and Indian, one cannot find it easy to recognize or identify Korean contemporary art as the styles and practices are so diverse. Partially, it is due to individual characteristics of Korean people preferring secluded art making environment in pursuing uniqueness among the peer group.

In this exhibition, the four artists, Eemyun Kang (b.1981), Hayoung Kim (b.1983), Hyuk Kwon (b.1966) and Junghyun Yoo (b.1973) represent different types of “Koreaness” in their thoughts and creation behind their art works. They all had education and experiences in different countries such as USA, Germany and the UK. All of them are from different age groups who experienced the different face of Korean society in their teens and 20s during the country’s ever fast growing economy in 80s, 90s and the new millennium. As the country’s economic status grew steeply, its social and traditional norms have also changed dramatically.

Kang’s work is based on mythologies intermingled with her contemporary imagination which is sometimes politically pungent with vigorous brush strokes and vivid colors. Kim’s work represents the fragility and delicateness of youth, however, the inner energy that supports the artist to stand and move on. Kwon is an international traveler and has conducted several interactive projects in many countries.

“It might be a very subtle sensation, or something insignificant. We are all consumers of the food chain, we can save energy, food chain’s consumers can assimilate all the energies stocked in plants, with a 10% of efficiency, therefore as consumers we can simultaneously exist in this food chain. Both existence and reason grow together into a natural freedom, photosynthesis may hide numerous unspoken rules, without leading us to a chaos of minor details, however what we do need is some free air, so we can experiment the illusion of withdrawing reality and spit out the blend of freedom factors as well as everything else. Since free air allowed us to, we freely gathered, accumulating the experiences of our two previous exhibitions “Spade” and “Fractal note”. Full of initiatives, we met different artists, combine similar thoughts, free natural factors’ incidents were enough and the most important is that in this photosynthesis repressed by unspoken rules, we can breathe free air. Hope that everyone will feel the same way when watching the exhibition, and have opportunities to participate to our activities, no matter if it is a life or an art exhibition.”

Mauro Corda is considered to be one of the most important figurative sculptors in Europe today, who has created countless artworks in different styles. His art evolves in time, and investigates the beauty of Human. The Sculptor is born in 1960 in Lourde, France. Since 1987, he lives and works in Paris. Being a sculptor, Mauro Corda is sensitive to colors. He is considered by contemporary fellows of capable to challenge light, volume and space. Not only he use different patinas on the bronze, but he applies multiple materials such gilt, silver-plated, marble and ceramic to amplify the genius of his technique. He portrays the human bodies, and exploits the humanity in multiple environments, roles and conditions. Mauro Corda’s works intends to clarify the inner feelings of the observer and the observed. He also experiments different materials on a same subject, to see if it can unfold the hidden emotion of the sculpture and inspire the viewer with a distinct sentiment. Dumonteil Galerie, in association with the artist, organizes the First Solo Exhibition in Shanghai China from April 9th to May 10th 2009. A Story of the Image presents a collection of artworks from the city of Antwerp (Belgium), which is both an historical and contemporary centre for the development of the possibilities of the image. The artworks embody the balancing act between the visible and the invisible. They are on loan from the collections of important Antwerp museums: the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum Plantin-Moretus/Print room that is recognised as UNESCO world heritage, and MuHKA (the Museum for Contemporary Art) that closely follows the developments in art and image culture.

Throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries a revolution took place in the West concerning the world of the image. The international art market first came into being in Antwerp. The artist came to stand apart from clients and was forced to start working for unknown destinations and clients. As a consequence new genres evolved, such as landscapes and still lives. Alongside this development the reproduction of images became possible thanks to developments in printing techniques. This was to lay the foundations for today’s globalised image culture.

Today the world can be experienced as a place in which one is engulfed by images: we live in a place marked by the mass media and mass consumption. Within this context, innumerable artists from the same region, once so significant to the beginnings of the mass media, deliberately distance themselves from it. They approach the image in an alternative way and probe its limits. They make us acutely aware of the image. And, just as in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, they have an attention for the everyday, the insignificant: the slight, barely existent, is everything.

Before the Golden Age—when the high-tech Consumerism multimedia teaching and large acreage low-priced inkjet are popularized, blackboard was once a prevailing tool of publicity and education. As the cheapest, easiest and simplex daily entertainment among the masses, blackboard has naturally formed a style of brief and concise, with text and pictures, rough but dazzle, subtle but moving over the years. It has been quietly hanging on the backwall of classroom with spider web, the gate of industrial and mining enterprises, by the corridor of community and rural brigade. It makes those young folk art lovers fully expressed their original talents. Each active artist now was once more or less participated in early aesthetic enlightenment national art practice, with the way forced, initiative, helpless, and positive, to accomplish the task.
Blackboard, the most common, political, serious, stereotyped, vacant, popular, flourish way of art creating, solely makes those precious, lifelike, inspired, hysterical, weird, irrepressible art be displayed initially and with glory. Even if it is a tool like propaganda, so ideology, so immobilized, so fascistic and different inside out, it can’t hold those talent artists back from the sensitivity of formal languages and those earthshaking talent can also be revealed tirelessly in the aesthetic standard of 1970s or 1980s. So how should artists who have obtained fully liberation and liberty today to face a once familiar and so plain blackboard?
Using blackboards as the basis of work form, the exhibition refers to property, creation factor, form carrier, background provider, and media experiment. In such an inflexible size and material, a space of 1m×2m, and facing those cheap non-professional materials of enlightenment period, then what kind of imagination will artist have? How to defuse those long years depressed desire of creation and expression? I wish this cross medium exhibition which has never been developed by aesthetic field in art history will remind all audience those dusty memories and unexpected surprise.

Art Economies beyond Pattern Recognition

This exhibition intends to discuss new possibilities within and for the art economy. The art market system—defined by the relationships between galleries, collectors, and auction houses—has provided a relatively stable system for centuries, as well as providing artists with clear instructions for the production of artworks and their place within the market chain. This system was, for a long time, based on the materialism of the art object and the possibility of bodily involvement. In our current situation, however, everything is produced and reproduced through technological means, pushing the commoditization of art to new heights. This sense of ownership and the material presence of the work itself are quite different from the past, as preservation and authenticity assured the stability of art market channels.

This exhibition of artists and their works attempts to introduce new possibilities and proposals for the changing roles of artists in the art economy as their activities blend into those of collectors, conservators, and entrepreneurs. Through their individual strategies, and in their conceptualization of their work, artists must take into consideration how the works will circulate through the art market, or how a project that strategically includes other artists and works might extend beyond the existing scale of art market activity.
