Untitled/ 2014/Reinforced Concrete Installation/190×122×105cm×9

The work is a small booth with a countdown lock. The size of the booth is 120 × 52 × 105cm, and its volume is almost that of an ordinary human being. The player sets the countdown lock, and goes inside. At the moment of door being closed, the countdown starts. The door can't be opened, and there is no key. 2003051420070427/2003-2007/ Pencil, Oil Pastel on Paper/32×24cm×108

I served a sentence in jail from May 14, 2003 to April 27, 2007, and painted many paintings in the course of that time. They were portraits of my inmates, paintings of daily items, and scenes inside the jail. Upon the monthly meetings with my family, some of them were sneaked out. Most of them, however, were left in the jail at last. In the first months in 2003, to sit and paint was thought as an negative attitude of mine toward the labor rehabilitation, and I was able to paint only when out of the watch of wardens and guards. Blades was prohibited in jail of course, so all my pencils were sharpened by grinding them upon wet cement floor. Later, my mother sent me a box of oil pastels, with which I drew some colorful paintings.

The Never Items in Jail /2013/ Mixed Media/ Different Sizes

All the exhibited items in this work were either something prohibited and confiscated in jail, or self-criticisms wrote by prisoners breaking discipline. There were various wrong doings: some collected Huoxiang Zhengqi Syrup in summer, and drank it as liquor; some made and circulated hand-written copies of the novels by Murakami Haruki; some doodled upon the Stipulation of the Jail, etc.

The Behavior Standard of Prisoner/2006/ Ink on Paper/ 32×24cm×57

The Behavior Standard of Prisoner, so called Rule 38, was enacted by the Department of Justice in its 88th ruling on May 1, 2004, and printed by the Jinan Jail, Shandong Province on July 1, 2005. In 2005 when I was 20, I got a task in jail: to draw illustrations for the Standard. The illustrations should be 'vivid', 'serious', and 'adaptingto the real circumstance in the jail'. It took me over one month to draw 55 pictures, and I was rewarded 20 points, which would amount to 6 months of parole.

Painting Project/2011/ Mixed Media/ Different Sizes

This work was initiated in the winter of 2011. We went to shot photos of the jail walls, but were stopped by guards and armed policemen, being told that anything characteristic of jail, like jail wall, electric fence, sentry of armed police, could not be photographed. So I drew all such the things instead. The materials used were picked up on site, such as cigarette case, writing paper printed by the official hostel to accommodate relatives of prisoners, pharmacy bag of the jail hospital, etc.

Tomorrow/ 2014/ Audio Files/ 15 Minutes

I wanted to make ablack box about a war. Since the war has not yet started, I found many recording engineers, and asked them to tell me what the still-to-come war is like with sounds.

Various Kinds of White/2014/ Ink on Paper/ 32×24cm×520

Since 2013, I began to collect the white colors around me, and compiled a system of whiteness. I made these white colors in computer using the Pantone code, and listed them to form a color spectrum. So far it consists of 8136 colors.

The Empire Plan/ 2013/

The Empire Plan/ 2013/ Email/ 500 Emails

The Empire Plan was one of the most controversial projects in the age of the Cold War. The Khrushchev regime always denied that it ever drew up the project, while the Kennedy regime collected various evidences to prove it was a real project to destroy the US. Over 50 years later, making use of world events from then on, and also using my imagination, I fabricated a project to destroy the US, which I spread throughout the world via email. To pass the sensitive-word surveillance of various softwares, only capital letters were used, and all the punctuation marks were deleted. Thus it looks like a random combination of letters, and is hard to read. But it is still possible to recognize some terrifying phrases, such as restorationism of Cuba, medium-range missile, and Guantanamo Bay detention camp.

The Archives of Orgasm/2014/ Audio Files, Photos/Audio 14 Minutes+Photo 10×10cm×50-70Pieces

This year I went tothe Jinan Jail 7 times for the sake of work, and got to knew many policemen of different kinds. One kind of them is porn identifier, whose job is to determine whether a product should be considered as pornography or not. After talking to them I learned that one needs to pass an exam to become a porn identifier. The examination included identification of image, text, and video. Since there was no part about identification of voice, I thought by myself that I would like to make one for the exam: to constitute a system of orgasm cries. I will submitthis system to the Public Security Bureau to be used as a part of the qualification exam of porn identifier.

One day when I was in my studio, I badly wanted to collect a fish from the Pacific Ocean. Then I did my best to describe the fish, and made for it a certificate of collection. I also made a plan to catch it.

Vogue/ 2014/Water Coloron Paper/ 32×24cm×547

In the winter of 2013, I began to make watercolor copies of the pages of a Vogue issue. Sometimes I drew many pieces a day, sometimes a piece a day. On June 23, 2014, I completed the entire copy of the issue, with a total of 551 pieces. It was a Vogue issueI bought on an airport in March, 2013 when I was on my way to a friend's wedding.

On July 31, 2014 my residence project in Klein Sun Gallery in Chelsea Art Galleries, New York began. It would last one month. The gallery provided a studio, and the finished work would be exhibited. I didn't liked studios, and needed one neither. I didn't want to make a work in that month. So I rent my studio out to another artist who travelled with me, and hired the prettiest girl in the gallery Amy Purssey with the rent. Amy took me to places I liked to visit. We went to cinema, to the roller coaster of Coney Island, to the most expensive restaurant, to the best night club of Manhatan, and looked for the best cocktail bar, etc. Throughout the journey we asked local people take group photos for us. This work was titled by Amy Purssey.
