Born in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province in 1961, Lin Tianmiao is one ofthe first female artists from China to achieve international recognition.During the 1980s, Lin studied in the Fine Art Department of the Capital NormalUniversity in Beijing. Following her studies, she moved to New York with herhusband Wang Gongxin, a celebrated video artist. They returned to China in1995, where they now reside. Early in her career, Lin worked as a successfultextile designer, later translating her experience along with the crafts ofweaving, sewing, and embroidery into her practice as a visual artist.
林天苗,1961年出生于山西太原,是首批获得国际知名度的中国女性艺术家之一。20世纪80年代,林在北京师范大学美术系学习。之后和知名的影像艺术家丈夫王功新移居纽约。1995年回国,定居至今。在早期,林是一名成功的纺织品设计师,之后将学习的经验并结合编织、 缝纫以及刺绣等技巧应用到艺术创作中,成为视觉艺术家。
Best known for herinstallations—such as The Proliferation of Thread Winding (1995) consisting of a bed of needleslinked to individually hand-wrapped balls of white cotton thread, with amonitor depicting the artist's painstaking handicraft laid beneath a sheerpillowcase—Lin also works in sculpture, photography, video, and a variety ofother media. Like The Proliferation of Thread Winding, muchof her work addresses women's issues. Lin links thread and the activity ofbinding and weaving to the female experience and her Chinese background, butthe final result evokes a shared human experience for the viewer, regardless ofgender, race, or nationality. Conceptual and obsessed with the intricatelyhand-made, Lin’s work operates within numerous dichotomies such as the privatevs. public, personal vs. cultural, male vs. female, natural vs. unnatural,remembered past vs. lived present. Through the use of common materials and thetransformation of quotidian objects, Lin evokes personal interpretations foreach viewer while maintaining a universally recognized experience.

From September 7, 2012 toJanuary 27, 2013, the Asia Society Museum in New York will present Bound Unbound, Lin Tianmiao’s first major solo museumexhibition in the United States. The exhibition will survey the last 20 yearsof Lin’s career and will include several entirely new installations. Anillustrated catalogue with a statement by the artist and essays by leading scholarson Chinese and Feminist art will accompany the exhibition.
从2012年9月7日到2013年1月27日,纽约亚洲协会美术馆将在美国展出林天苗首次大型个人回顾展“缠了,再剪开”。此展览将回顾林20年艺术创作实践并且包含几件全新创作的作品。同时随展画册中将有艺术家陈词以及在中国及女性艺术领域的知名学者撰写的评论文章。
Lin’s first exhibition with Galerie Lelong will be presentedin New York from October 25 to December 8, 2012. The exhibition will highlightLin’s installation Badges (2009),a collection of hanging embroidery hoops in various sizes, each emblazoned witha different word used to describe women in contemporary culture. The work waspreviously shown using only Chinese characters, but Lin has created a selectionof hoops embroidered in English to be integrated into the installation,fostering a new cross-cultural identity.
