The essence of Chinese painting lies in “purport”. The realms are born of the mind; the beauty of the universe is so great that we cannot express it, which allows us to understand and perceive nature and the universe through pure innocence. In a certain sense, artists communicate closely with all things; they use form, color, and meaning to build the little world of a “present image,” an artwork. Both Eastern and Western artists build these worlds; they use different artistic methods to liberate the hazy desires of worldly things from the restrictions of daily language.
Even though he identifies as a Western artist, we can see that Tung-Wen Margue has a deep understanding of Eastern spiritual imagery. His creative concepts are overall states that relate to many things, forming a process of mutual development. In his works, rigid Western modeling and structure become more relaxed; he controls the soft fluidity and the rhythm of form and color. From a carefree form emerge images of the earth enveloped by poetry. Whether he has painted a brook, snow, or mountains, the content of his works reject the need to depict specific forms and embody the aesthetics of the landscape itself, creating a tension that is both loose and fixed. Visually, the tranquil “Chinese essence” of his paintings gives us a sense of warmth. This warmth cannot be accomplished merely by living in Beijing for a few months. It comes from his Chinese mother’s early enlightenment, a diffuse ambience of the love, study, practice of Eastern thought and culture that he has carried with him ever since.
Therefore, it is easy for us to see that the works also contain his living and spiritual states. Tung-Wen Margue’s Beijing feelings reflect a cross-section of his close relationship with “Dao” - the Way and his understanding of the Eastern Zen spirit.
