Dear Officer:
I am Karen Patterson, Canadian Citizen, and wife of Chinese citizen, WU Yuren. Just would like to bring to your attention a very unfortunate situation that has taken place recently, one that truly affects my life in China in a very negative way.
On May 31st, 2010, my husband accompanied Mr. YANG, the owner of the Sugar Jar CD Music shop in 798, to the Jiuxianqiao Police Station to report on a criminal act of the 798 Management. Mr. Yang mentioned to WU that he had been having problems with the 798 Management, and so he decided to enlist the assistance of WU Yuren. Being a helpful guy, my husband agreed to accompany Mr. Yang to the po:ice station. Both WU and YANG never returned from the po:ice station on the night of May 31, 2010.
At the po:ice station, it is reported that WU Yuren was not only provoked into getting angry by the po:ice and video taped, but after about 3 hours, was beaten by 5 po:ice in a solitary room, with a shirt over his head.
WU Yuren and YANG Licai were both transferred to the detention center on June 1, where WU Yuren was placed in the criminal section, and Mr. Yang was placed in the civil section of the center. Wu was given the charge of “Obstructing and Attacking a Police Officer”. After arriving at the detention center, Mr. WU requested to have an x-ray taken of his torso, as he felt injured after the beating that he received on the night of May 31st.
Mr. YANG was released after 10 days, the allotted time that was stated on his detention center admission form. However, for reasons we do not know, the time allotment on Mr. WU’s form was left blank, and hence WU is still in criminal detention. We have no information of when he will be released, as I have not had any access to him, received any calls from the po:ice (Chinese law states that they must notify the spouse by phone call person to person within 24 hours), nor received an official detention report. I have tried in person many times to get information, but have been refused.
Last week I hired a lawyer to visit my husband, but he was also denied access to seeing my husband. Not sure if this is local policy or a further way of hiding the facts from the family and public.
I have lived in China now for close to 14 years, have married a Chinese citizen, given birth to our child, and generally enjoyed my life in China. However, I can’t help but wonder how it is that five po:icemen can beat a Chinese citizen who is reporting a crime at a local po:ice station? Not to mention, since May 31st, I have not received any official person-to-person call, notice or information from the authorities with regards to his detention and his ‘charge’, including any information about the process and system of detention in China. All official channels of receiving information about my husband have been blocked. Furthermore, this event deeply affects my life in China, not to mention that of our daughter, who is almost 6 years old and misses her father. When she asks me when he will come home, I am at a loss of what to tell her.
I am asking for your help in assisting me in collecting any information about WU Yuren and his case, including what happened at the po:ice station on the night of May 31st, why he was placed into the criminal section of the detention center, and why I have not received any information about my husband. Any assistance that you can provide is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time. Please contact me directly if you would like to meet to further discuss.
Sincerely,
Karen Patterson
