GAZING
Gazing means a unique outlook and a silent insight. In the eyes of artist Cao Ping, painting itself is a form of gazing, generated by the encounter of a destiny of your own.
Being intrigued by painting profoundly, Cao Ping looks at the art as an outlet of feeling, a solidified passion about memories.
With a history of five thousand years, painting in China has adopted an extremely systematic pattern. However, under the current environment, painting should grow some new seeds in the soil of old tradition. In ancient China, flower-and-bird painting was more regarded as a small-scaled sketch. With a reference to the western expressions, Cao Ping re-interprets the composition of the bird-and-flower sketching and attaches to it a magnifying effect and a western approach to the inner feelings. Therefore, her paintings manifest a meeting of eastern and western traditions and a style of personalized experience.
In the exhibition, Cao Ping will present us her understanding of nature as well as her artistic feelings. The huge piece of work April expresses an alternate state of life and death. April is a moment when winter just passes and spring comes. This work of painting reminds us a line of "The Waste Land" , poem by the English poet T. S. Eliot: "April is the cruelest month." The work Rose Garden, depicting three or five girls in the glamorous scene of peacocks, flowers and birds, is very much a modern version of the “figures of ladies” paintings…
For the eastern and western painting styles, Cao Ping has her own unique, profound understanding. In her view, the western paintings are descriptive and tell about human reactions of desires and life-and-death issues, while the oriental paintings, such as those of landscapes and flowers and birds, are metaphorical and analogical, more related to comprehension of nature and human relationship with nature.
Since 1990's, Cao Ping has moved to the Netherlands. She admitted that, as a Chinese artist with knowledge of the western visual art system, she has been thinking of how to explore something valuable out of the cultural tradition of her own so that it could be absorbed into her artistic creation. However, she claims, "My artistic approach represents neither the East nor the West, nor the East-West confrontation. My work has been more involved in a personalized feeling, which happens to be universal as well."
"The 21st century is an era when East and West integrate,” Cao Ping said, “and each should present the best of its culture." She means what she says and keeps practicing. Nowadays, due to the availability of diverse art forms, artists have a lot of options. Yet Cao Ping still asserts a stubborn love for painting. In her view, painting is a kind of fine arts which can be accomplished independently by one’s own; and importantly, when you demand so less from others, your freedom at heart grows so more.
Truly, for Cao Ping, the loved painting leads to the soul freedom. May her be blessed!
