85'新潮时期为江苏艺术群体《红色·旅》成员，早期作品为超现实主义风格绘画，93年开始创作“点”抽象绘画，94年开始在绘画的同时从事观念摄影，近年开始以点仿制老照片系列绘画。现居住北京。

The Canadian Embassy in Beijing is pleased to announce that the Solo Exhibition of Pauline Choi’s art works will be held at the EGG Gallery in Beijing from May 23 to July 4, 2009.
Pauline Choi is a Canadian artist who was born in Korea. She grew up in Canada and studied art in Toronto and New York before receiving a Cité Internationale des Arts grant and moving to Paris. Since then she has exhibited her work widely in Europe, Korea and Canada.
Having emigrated first to Canada as a child, Choi lives in Paris twice removed from her origins, and her sense of cultural identity combines opposing forces and traditions. Her latest paintings and light boxes seek to capture the atmosphere of the natural and man-made worlds, exploring the contrasts between each. Like all of Choi’s work, they have a strong sculptural presence that transforms the base matter of the material world into evocations of memory and desire.
Choi’s first exhibition in Beijing – “PARIS” seeks to capture the atmospheric qualities of Paris’s celebrated light and transport it, via paintings and light boxes, to the Chinese capital. Choi has long been interested in the interplay between the ephemera of light and air and the unchanging qualities of the city of Paris.
Some of her images are based on photographs by Eugene Atget, made especially for the artist’s use, as well as on 1960s French new wave films by Truffaut, Rivette and Malle, which through a new found spontaneity and freedom use of the camera lend both a timeless and contemporary sense to Paris. At once magical and realistic, elusive and concrete, Choi’s work is always concerned with light and its interplay with dark and shadow. It is that interplay that transforms what might look at first like a static image into works full of movement and change in time and space.
Her paintings are built up of thin layers of oil paint on mylar, a translucent film, which create an intangible, highly elusive impression. The light boxes generate ambience of the space while at the same time amplifying the effect of each individual work. Choi’s light boxes of Paris are utterly abstract but nonetheless evoke the City of Light’s night sky and air. It is as if she had transferred it whole to Beijing.
Choi has been awarded many prizes and grants during her career. She has taught at the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto and at Parsons School of Art in Paris.

Pauline Choi est une artiste canadienne née en Corée. Elle a grandi au Canada et étudié l'art à Toronto et à New York avant de recevoir une bourse de la Cité internationale des Arts et de déménager à Paris. Depuis lors, elle a maintes fois exposé ses œuvres en Europe, en Corée et au Canada.
Choi a émigré au Canada alors qu’elle était encore enfant et habite maintenant à Paris. Coupée de ses origines à deux reprises, son sens de l’identité culturelle combine donc des forces et des traditions qui s'opposent. Ses peintures et caissons lumineux les plus récents cherchent à capter l'atmosphère des mondes naturels et artificiels, explorant les contrastes entre chacun. Comme l’ensemble de l’œuvre de Choi, ses dernières œuvres manifestent une présence sculpturale intense qui transforme la matière de base du monde matériel en évocations de mémoire et de désir.
La première exposition de Choi à Beijing – « PARIS » – cherche à capter les qualités atmosphériques de la lumière de Paris, tant célébrée, et elle la transporte dans la capitale chinoise par l'intermédiaire des peintures et des caissons lumineux. Choi a longtemps été intéressée par l'interaction entre l'éphémère de la lumière et de l'air et les qualités immuables de la ville de Paris.
Certaines de ses images sont basées sur des photos d’Eugène Atget, prises spécialement pour l’artiste, de même que sur des films français de la nouvelle vague des années 1960, dont Truffaut, Rivette et Malle. Par une spontanéité nouvellement trouvée et l’utilisation libre de la caméra, ces films donnent de Paris un sens à la fois intemporel et contemporain. À première vue magique et réaliste, insaisissable et concrète, l’œuvre de Choi fait toujours intervenir la lumière et son interaction avec l'obscurité et l'ombre. C'est cette interaction qui transforme ce qui pourrait à première vue avoir l’air d’une image statique en œuvres pleines de mouvement et de changement dans le temps et l’espace.
Ses peintures sont faites de minces couches de peinture à l'huile sur Mylar, un film translucide, ce qui produit une impression d’intangibilité, hautement fugace. Les caissons lumineux produisent une ambiance d'espace, tout en amplifiant l'effet de chaque œuvre individuelle. Les caissons lumineux de Paris de Pauline Choi sont tout à fait abstraits, mais ils évoquent néanmoins le ciel et l'air nocturnes de la Ville Lumière. C’est comme si elle avait transféré tout cela à Beijing.
Choi s’est vue attribuer de nombreux prix et bourses pendant sa carrière. Elle a enseigné au Ontario College of Art and Design de Toronto et à la Parsons School of Art de Paris.

葆琳•崔是一名出生于韩国的加拿大艺术家。她在加拿大长大。在获得法国巴黎国际艺术城的资助以及移居巴黎之前，她曾在多伦多和纽约学习艺术。自那以来，她在欧洲、韩国和加拿大广泛展出自己的作品。
崔幼年时先移居加拿大，现在在巴黎生活，这是她第二次远离了自己的家乡，她的文化认同感把对立势力与传统相结合。她最新的绘画和灯箱作品谋求捕获自然界和人类创造的世界的氛围 ，探索两者之间的反差。如同崔的所有作品一样，它们有着强烈的雕塑感源，把物质世界的基本物质转化为对记忆和愿望的召唤。
崔在北京举办首次画展“巴黎”，希望捕捉巴黎著名的灯火辉煌的艺术气氛，并且通过绘画和灯箱把这种气氛带到中国的首都。长期以来，崔对光和空气的短暂与巴黎市不变的特质之间的交相映衬感兴趣。
她的一些图像是基于尤金•阿杰（Eugene Atget）拍摄的专门为艺术家所用的照片以及20世纪60年代特吕弗（Truffaut）、里维特（Rivette）和马勒（Malle）拍摄的法国新浪潮电影。通过新发现的自发性和自由使用照相机、摄影机给巴黎带来了不受时间影响的当代感。崔的作品既绝妙又现实，既难以捕捉又具体，始终注重光以及光与黑暗、阴影的交相映衬。就是这种交相映衬把可能咋看起来静止的图像变成在时间和空间上充满动感和变化的作品。
她的画是用薄薄的几层油画颜料在密拉——一种半透明的聚酯薄膜上构成，产生一种无形的、难以捉摸的印象。灯箱产生了一种空间的气氛，同时增强每一件作品的效果。崔的巴黎灯箱完全是抽象的，但是却唤起了巴黎的夜空和空气，好像她将整个巴黎转移到了北京。
崔在艺术生涯中获得许多奖项和资助，她在多伦多安大略艺术和设计学院和巴黎帕森艺术与设计学院教过学。
