这部极富震撼力的纪录片讲述的是约瑟夫•波依斯于1980年1月7日在纽约的促进科学与艺术库帕联合会与大众对话的情景。通过这段录像,以及他在古根海姆博物馆的个展,波依斯阐述了他对艺术体系、艺术实践的看法以及他是如何理解艺术实践与个体及大众的关系的问题。在这段对话录像中,最引人注意的是观众的反应千差万别,有直接而尖锐的提问,还有为指出波依斯的这些观点在实际应用中可能遇到的种种困难而进行的即兴行为表演。

This is a video recording of the artist’s dialogue with the public that took place in New School for Social Research in New York. In the video, Beuys draws his ideas of public art practices in three large boards, explains them, and erases everything after the dialogue. Among the audience were Claes Oldenburg, Al Hansen and others. The apparent tenseness in the audience shows the then controversial reactions to his project, the sharply divided opinions. The dialogue was also his very first move in the US.

This powerful documentary video records the artist’s dialogue with his audience at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York on January 7, 1980. In this dialogue held in conjunction with Beuys’ solo exhibition in the Guggeheim Museum, Beuys presents his view on art system, art practice and its relationship with individuals and the public. What is most noticeable in this dialogue is the audience’s responses ranging from intense questions to an improvised performance that comments on the difficulties implied in practical application of Beuys’ ideas.
