Man(常人)的生存。

Art Program of the Common I

WE

Sponsored by: Art Communication Company of the Common, Art Club of the Common
Curators: Gao Shiming & Li Jiawen
Artists participated: Zhang Peili (Hangzhou), Qiu Zhijie (Beijing).

‘Who are we?’
This is a tough question raised by the philosopher Rorty. According to Rorty, the inquiry into ‘We’ differs from the question ‘what is a human being?’, for the latter is a typical metaphysical issue, while the former is a political one. The major problem inside politics lies in the differentiation of ‘we’ from ‘they’. Although we, leading common life, have no need to bother with such differentiation, we can’t help uttering these words: ‘We …’

First of all, there is an imaginative sense of community rooted in the word
‘we’, referring to the affirmation of one’s identity. I am surrounded by this ‘We’, a platform that supports individuals, and a mob that submerges individuality. It is each COMMON, namely, ‘ALL’, ‘EVERYMAN’, or ‘ANY
MAN’ that comprises ‘WE’.
‘All’ is the support for those upset by fragility. ‘All’, related to the human race, though a comprehensive word, and guaranteed the vitality of every individual, is devoid of every single figure.
‘Everyman’ refers to any possible figure, and, in fact, any one can be identified with a certain role in society.
‘Any man’ a word not specific, is a negative reflexive appellation used by individualists. However, any man retains the right to be someone else, or refuse to be what one is.
‘All’ is a totalitarian concept, ‘Everyman’ the subject of democracy, and a society that endows everybody with equal happiness unhappy; ‘Any man’, referring to ‘All’ and covering ‘Everyman’ plays an intermediate role. ‘Any man’, ‘All’, and ‘Everyman’, all these three terms signify a certain attitude, and a state of being in which there is ‘das man’.
Das man is not specific, too, but each of ‘us’ who have dissolved into it. ‘All’ is a convergent group, while common people are just the Common, namely, every common figure resembling one another. Such is what we call
Uneightlichkeit, a state diverted from its original condition. The Common indicates our common sense, which, though we intend to escape at every possible moment, is difficult to get rid of. In daily life, we behave in the form of common figures, and thus ‘We’ turn out to be ‘Any man’, ‘Everyman’, and ‘All’.

Zhang Peili, Qiu Zhijie are among those most individual in the contemporary Chinese art circle. For these four artists, ‘We’ indicates the vague existence of a group of individuals without specificity. From 1980 onward, they commenced the same career in different directions. Behind Zhang Peili’s cold, vapid video, there is poignant significance; Qiu Zhijie contemplates on a labyrinthic mess of problems; all of these above can be regarded as a malicious resistance against the ideology which ‘We’ is in. ‘We’ is the carrier of ideology, any of which intends to create a certain kind of ‘We’. For these four individualist posse men with a strong hostility against ideology, there is nothing like ‘We’. They intend to present such an idea via this exhibition: there is an absolute miracle, which can’t be repeated once it has happened, inside every individual being; and what we call ‘We’, is but an expired check, a Rubik’s cube waiting to be dismantled, or a sublime phantom looming in the dreams of ideology.
