Richard Orient
Untitled-MMP#2

14" x 30"
For his new abstract series of paintings, Richard Orient employs a technique whereby he coaxes the liquid paint onto the surface, both paper and rubber, in a controlled motion, resulting in shapes that resemble waveforms. The translucent forms reveal the history of layers beneath, giving the work a strong sense of depth.
Colorful, fluid waveforms of poured acrylic explores the artist’s participation in a rhythmic process. Similar to ceramic glazing, the arrangements of layers of color that suggest biomorphic forms, as well as natural processes of accumulation and erosion. A progression from the artist’s earlier work depicting waves, these new “waveforms” are similar in their gesture, but now the artist is reacting abstractly to the gravitational pulse. The act of pouring becomes the wave and these panels are the record of frequency and flow. Orient explains, “I’m fascinated with the spontaneity and the cause and effect nature of this painting process, as the paint responses to my gentle bending of the paper and rubber surfaces, facilitating the pouring of the paint. It’s an action painting of sorts, with an even, yet uncontrolled, rhythm.”
In this current exhibition, orient has moved his studio to amagansett and has set about recording the different light and terrain of eastern long island. Ocean reflections, beach dunes and landscapes bathed in light and shadow are captured by orient in his accomplished oils on paper.
Richard Orient has painted for the last twenty years. His painting has developed from abstract interpretations of nature and space to specific moments and specific mark making. When the artist found a discarded 1915 Bank Ledger he recognized the need to preserve the history and record of accounts from nearly a century ago. The pages of the Ledger with columns of names, dates, and entry resonated with the artist and became the vehicle for a series of mixed media work. The daily recording done by hand in 1915 is overlapped with Orient’s new record of marks , patterns, and print, creating a new history and a new ledger of sorts.
The found ledger book brings feelings of history and appreciation of dedicated work from a time past for the artist. Orient uses the paper to create contemporary work which is collected by numerous private clients and major corporations including Equitable,
Hallmark and Pfizer. The artist says, “this series interprets abstract and pattern painting for me, creating a new history on a document paper which recorded data in 1915.”
Richard Orient has exhibited throughout the United States. A native of Pittsburgh, PA, Orient studied at Carnegie Mellon University, receiving his degree in Fine Art Painting. Born in 1954, the artist live and works in New York City and Amagansett, New York. This is the Second solo exhibition for the artist at the George Billis Gallery.
