混生(Confuse & Life)
Confuse & Life
By June
“Hybridity” will be held on June 24th at Fun Art Space. “Hybridity” explicates an art that is the outcome of difference, diversity, and mixture. The difference in this exhibition is multi-faceted: for example, the regional Sichuan artist Yu Ji, the long time researcher into art space on stage, Zhang Hui, and Shi Qing, who has a background in science but is interested in the exploration of rituals. These three artists differ in everything from background to artistic style and direction, yet they coexist and grow within the developing environment of contemporary Chinese art. The key to “Hybridity” is relativism and a mixture of diversified narratives. The English term ‘Confuse & Life’ allows the Chinese concept to enter its concrete environment, that is, a normal and balanced interpretation of daily life. Daily massification or popularization provide us with the basic meaning in life, they also join with the cultural spirit of modern people, with which they have a reflexive relationship. “Hybridity” is comprised of three young artists at their creative climax: Shi Qing, Yu Ji, and Zhang Hui, their adventures in contemporary art have taken place over the last ten years.
Since Shi Qing’s first exhibition, he’s produced over 40 artworks, mostly performance, installation, short videos, photography and multi-media. His artistic language leans towards an exploration of rituals; this ritualistic language has some relation to dramatic elements. Shi Qing’s works attempt to create a “stage” ambiance, with the help of the combined possibilities of artistic media, to ritualize everyday life through symbolism. The repetition and sudden occurrence of bodily and behavioral actions have already become the main thread of his artworks; functionality has been discarded and changed into a conversation with the body. Works by Shi Qing will showcase his newest experimental exploration, that is, while rejecting history, to remix and ferment the subjective understanding of the past, using history on the artist’s body as “a corpse to bring back the soul”.
Yu Ji belongs to the wild artists of mainland China, his earlier work “Kiss of a Beauty” once stirred up fierce discussion. But, this seemingly cruel artwork is in fact expressing the simple concept of “the abnormal, unnatural, unequal, and unharmonious” coexistence between humans and animals. In Yu Ji’s performances, there is a melting of the bodily experience of will and the extreme process of performance into a provocative artistic effect. One example is his recent performance in Taipei using simple props such as flour. His sharp sensibility and confused excitement, natural talent and disposition are also reflected in his photographs and installations—burned skin without any facial organs, helpless eyes, inexplicable eyebrows, smiling lips. In this exhibition, Yu Ji will demonstrate once again how art has “the law of lawlessness”.
As a “diversified” artist, all of Zhang Hui’s artworks show a consideration of the use of multimedia along with the use or renovation of space. This is related to his professional training in dance. This time he will again appear as a member of the “gathering of weird objects group” (the other members of this group are Wang Mao, Wang Kun, and Wang Renke). The interesting thing about Zhang Hui has always been his use of the relationship of front and back stage and multimedia to solve the question how to enter a different space. In this exhibition, he uses the uniqueness of video and sculpture to lead into a conceptual disorientation of time and space, to create a crossover and piling effect of “surreal” and “reality” through which to reexamine our daily life.
