中国行为艺术家杨志超在威尼斯遭拘捕

意大利利当地时间6月10日下午5:10分，来自中国的艺术家杨志超在参加威尼斯双年展独立策展部份“P3 Project”展览时，在威尼斯圣马可广场的钟楼顶层实施其行为作品“圣马可的钟声”时，遭当地警方拘捕。

　　杨志超在到逹钟楼顶层后，将上面写有：“我请求见意大利文化部长先生，否则我将自杀”， 寛1．2米，长20米的英文红色条幅从窗口抛下，30分钟后， 当地po.lice赶到现场带走杨志超。在经过5小时的询问，审查和取证后，于当地时间23:00左右将杨志超释放，条幅、字牌、信件被没收。

　　据杨志超讲，他这样做是想把一封阐述作品动机、涉及到自杀问题的信件亲自交给意大利文化部长先生。意大利国家电视台及各大报皆报导了此次事件。P3 PROJECT 的策划人陈媚媛女士，及中国的艺术家王庆松、黄岩、林兵目击了整个过程。（2007年6月12日 威尼斯报导）

　　附：杨志超给意大利文化部长的信

　　尊敬的意大利文化部长先生：

　　您好！以这样的方式和您见面，是十分尴尬和无奈的。这多少会让您感到莫名奇妙和愤怒，但只要想想您的身份，没有非常形式就绝无见您的可能。尽管贵国的民主制度和程序使一介平民会见总统并不是不可能，但对于一个来自中国的普通艺术家而言，则又是另一回事。做为一个艺术家，这既是我的一件行为作品，又是一次带有使命感的普通行为事件。因为在中国有许多的平民为了讨得工资和维护个人利益，正是采用这样看似极端的做法，以赢取媒体和社会的广泛关注，从而实现对个人权益的保护，这是无奈的又是令人悲哀的。这样的事件暴露出社会中存在的诸多问题。从个人角度讲，我并不赞同这种方式，但屡屡出现的这种现象，无疑引起了多方面的关注。作为艺术家，对这件事情的思考最终构成了创作这一行为作品的全部动机。艺术家是有国界的，但艺术作品是全人类的，因此，当一位艺术家以他自己的方式展现这样的问题，以期引起国家乃至世界的重视，从而达成更为科学的法律的解决方法，就不能不说是每一个人包括部长先生您的权利和义务。在历史上，意大利是一个值得自豪的国家，从过去到现在，各个行业的大师不断出现，其思想的深度和震撼力为世界所瞩目，这恰恰表明了意大利的民主和开放程度。因此，借用双年展的机会，完成并实施这件作品，具有双重的暗示和隐喻，也是借此衡量贵国对民主自由和文化自由态度的一种实验。我无意挑战贵国的社会制度和对文化所采取的自由策略，但做为另一国度的艺术家，能把自己对社会的思考和提问转化为作品，带到意大利，正是基于对意大利的信任和自豪！在古老中国的历史上，有许多忠臣为了阻止国家权利的滥用和错误决定，而不惜血荐。也有许多平民在得到了错误的判决后，重新申诉时，最重要的一环是伸冤者必须先承受酷刑的考验，才能再次伸冤。这样的做法仅仅为了证明你伸冤的诚意。所以，当一个艺术家采用这样的方式时，实际上是在展示自己的真诚和信义。艺术家永远和社会联系在一起，艺术家创作的每一件作品都是社会的产物。这既是一种责任，又是一种思考。靠着许许多多人的努力，社会得以日趋完善和进步。

　　以下几点，用以说明我的想法和理由。

　　一：这件作品无意伤害任何人和任何国家、它是对人类所遭遇问题提出关注的一个方式。由于威尼斯双年展的世界性影响，因此，提出一个有关人类普遍生存的问题应该是更为迫切的。

　　二：意大利政府对此件作品的态度无疑是一个范式，或好或坏都深刻影响着世界范围内对艺术的宽容程度和把握。由于我的行为在贵国所应付的责任有我一人承担，和其他人、其它艺术组织、国家没有关系。

　　三：我的艺术作品是对基层人的生存行为的复制，也是反映现实中人最真实的存在形式。我并无解决现实中具体存在问题的能力，但反映和再现这样的问题是艺术自产生以来就存在的一个重要特征，社会也因艺术的存在而日渐完善和美好。

　　四：艺术家虽有权利表现现实，但实际上的作用很弱小，但由于部长先生您的参与，而使这样的现实问题有理由进入议事日程，从而完善和推进对人类发展所遭遇到问题的合理解决和出台相关法律，是这件作品的目的。

　　五：全球化所带来的问题不容忽视，地球上每个角落产生的动荡和生存艰难以及由此而出现的问题均是和每个国家和每个人每一块人类生存的栖息地有关。在所有发展中国家，包括发达的西方，这样的问题依然存在，因此，对这样问题的引入，是对全球化进程中所有国家遇到问题的暗示，它是对人类普遍生存状态和现实矛盾的忧虑和反思，并非仅指中国。

　　六：国家奉行自由和民主制度不是说这个国家没有问题，而是给予这些问题以公平的方式和合理解决的途径，这才是真正的民主和自由。

　　七：生命的尊严在于好好活着，但连尊严都要失去，生命的价值就必须怀疑，因此选择死亡是人类保存尊严的最后方式，这正是人类区别于任何其它物种的存在价值。

　　八：数据表明，全球每天都有人自杀，还有许多人自杀未遂，这并非仅仅是个人问题，而是在大背景中，和一个国家的政治制度、民主权利、组织形式、经济策略、文化倾向有关。我并不想做社会学家，也无意上升到理论高度，但对人类生存的共同关注却是相同的。

　　我在叙述了这件作品的动机和理由后，我有一个请求：把这份文字说明面呈意大利文化部长先生。最后祝威尼斯双年展成功！祝意大利永保艺术青春！祝全世界所有人自由幸福、和平美好！谢谢！

　　Your Excllency, Respected Minister of Culture of Italy:

　　It is certainly embarrassing to appeal to Your Excellency for “meeting” with me in such an unnatural way. Your democractic system must allow citizens an easy eccess to meet with high-ranking officials such as the President of your country, but the opportunity is presumably slim for a little–known Chinese artist like me to meet with Your Excellency because the mere thought of your distinguished position holds back the idea.

　　By sending you this letter I did not mean to surprise you or to be offensive in any slightest degree. Instead, it is a part and parcel of my on-going artistic creation, a live-art creation with a mission which will be staged at this year’s Venice Biennial. In the remainder of this letter, allow me to explain my mission related to the motif of performance.

　　In my country, some populace have resorted to suicidal attempts when desperately trying to defend their rights and benefits, such as in the case of farmers’ appealing to their employers for their overdue pays. It seems that only by risking their precious lives are they likely to attract enough attention from the community and the media, the presence of which may eventually help the disadvantaged to safeguard their personal interests and claim possession of their delayed due rewards. Though gravely upsetting, such life-risking occurances are not acceptable in my view. However, since they are not uncommon and have drawn a lot of my attention, I am consequently motivated to shape the them into my artistic creation now.

　　As known to all, artists have their nationalities, but their creations are assets beyond national boundaries. Therefore, when an artist brings along with him the problems on his land to the major international art event hosted by your country, each and every individual here is obliged to brainstrom for a sound solution to them; Your Excellency the Minister is undoubtedly committed to the same mission too.

　　So why Italy? Traditionally, your country has produced many a great minds in every field; their ideas and impact have always been the world’s pride and hallmarked Italy’s remarkable maturity of your democracy and your permissiveness. That is the reason why I wish to display my concept and finialise my creation on this year’s Biennial: both suggestively and metaphorically Italy serves to be a laboratory where I will be conducting an experiment on your permissiveness and cultural tolerance. In other words, I am not here to challenge your social and cultural liberty; it is my full confidence in and great reverence for Italy that have allured me, a Chinese artist, to materialise in your country my long-term reviews and questioning about some of the social problems!

　　In ancient China, loyal government officials would put forth their ideas in their blood in order to save the governments from power abuses and dire decision-makings. Likewise, after they lodged an appeal, the wrongly sentenced convicts would go through harshest corporal punishment simply to test whether or not they were serious about the appealing. By relating to these examples, I wish to point out that an artist is earnest in his artistic pursuit and his effort to bring together the community and their art works should be duly acknowledged. Indeed, we are all committed to make the world a better place.
